Discussion

Mark Nathan (asker) Sep 20, 2006:
Something ambiguous like "in pick up mode" would probably be OK, but I'd like to understand what this actually means.

While the phone is in use or off the hook

I could be way off here, hence my confidence level. I am picturing a guy having a heart attack and having just enough strength to raise the alarm but not enough to hang up his phone... something like that. But it's really just a guess!

I found this: http://www.ericsson.com/ericsson/corpinfo/publications/telec... . If the phone is not equipped with GPS or bluetooth or similar technology as in this case, I guess the line has to be open for tracing.

Another reference here: http://www.buddysafe.com/TermsConditions.asp
talks about tracing using mobile phone masts: "The accuracy of the location requests delivered will vary depending upon the availability and coverage of mobile phone masts. Where there is no mobile phone network coverage, we are unable to determine location in response to any location request." But from reading further about this type of mobile positioning I believe the phone only needs to be switched on (and therefore sending a signal) to be located in this way.

agree Kari Foster : Hadn't noticed the second part of what you said --you were on the right track.

in talk mode

The TALK /MONITOR switch is on the inside of the hand grip near the transmitter. It puts the unit on-hook (Monitor mode) or off-hook (Talk mode).

Le commutateur TALK /MONITOR (Conversation/ Contrôle) se trouve à l’intérieur de la poignée, près de l’émetteur. Il sert à placer l’appareil en mode raccroché (mode de contrôle) ou en mode décroché (mode conversation).

off-hook mode

Same idea as some of the others, but I found confirmation in a telephony glossary (see ref.)
