"O Dia de S Martinho comemora-se a 11 de Novembro. Neste dia, em Portugal, assam-se castanhas e prova-se o vinho novo. A tradicao manda que se festeje com castanhas, agua-pe, uma fogueira para saltar, musica e muito convivio."

As it's getting close to S Martinho, I thought we should decide how to translate 'agua-pe'. The more you know about how it's made, the harder it gets!

Think you could get away with not translating it? I haven't seen an English word for it but an explanation of what it is. After all other famous drinks aren't translated from the original language and are usually spelled the same.

I congratulate you, Mike, on finding a translation at all for água-pé. I've never met one before. Paltry-wine is quite expressive (and you have the correct definition, of course) but I submit that because it's so rare it conveys as little to the average reader as the original PT term. So, does it fail the basic test of clearly communicating what's meant?

And, by the way, I have never had the so-called água-pé and have no intentions of ever having it, unless you can send me the recipe (you seem to know a lot about it!) CHEERS!

If agua-pe is rum, I've been shortchanged every November for 15 years!
This is a good example of that indefinable element of translation that is about cultural understanding and personal experience. If you had ever sampled água-pé, you would never confuse it with rum. I don't blame you because I've made far worse mistakes.

agree Transperts : Água-pé = Rum, then surely salt = sugar. Pomace wine was one very good translation missing in the above.
