"O Dia de S Martinho comemora-se a 11 de Novembro. Neste dia, em Portugal, assam-se castanhas e prova-se o vinho novo. A tradicao manda que se festeje com castanhas, agua-pe, uma fogueira para saltar, musica e muito convivio."

Think you could get away with not translating it? I haven't seen an English word for it but an explanation of what it is. After all other famous drinks aren't translated from the original language and are usually spelled the same.

Paltry-wine is quite expressive (and you have the correct definition, of course) but I submit that because it's so rare it conveys as little to the average reader as the original PT term. So, does it fail the basic test of clearly communicating what's meant? |

| This is a good example of that indefinable element of translation that is about cultural understanding and personal experience. If you had ever sampled água-pé, you would never confuse it with rum. I don't blame you because I've made far worse mistakes. |
