Por extensão, tombamento (que era a simples inclusão de um registro no livro) passou a ser entendido como o Estado colocar sob a sua guarda, "para os conservar e proteger (bens móveis e imóveis cuja conservação e proteção sejam do interesse público, por seu valor histórico, ou artístico, ou arqueológico, ou etnográfico, ou paisagístico ou bibliográfico)" (Aurélio).
De acordo com o Black's Law Dictionary, "historic site" é "any building, structure, area or property that is significant in the history, architecture, archeology or culture of a State, its communities or the Nation and has been so designated pursuant to statute. Such structure are commonly statutorily protected and cannot be altered without permission of the appropriate authorities."
