Process for producing clarified butter/oil, howwever there are frequent references to extracting "terra"or washing "terra" etc, and the above phrase appears a bit wierd to me if literal translation used ie, '....extraction of earth during clarification (whitening) of phosphatics'etcetc

Martin I think I am getting to the bottom of it nearly.
I think it is what is called filter (or diatomaceuos) earth - neither of which description fill me with any sort of deep affection or joy!!
Check out filter earth on Google.

It sounds as though it is mixed deliberately. The original text says "São retirados COM a terra..." so maybe this "terra" is, as you suggest, a cleansing agent. So the question remains: what is it? It is unlikely to be soil from the ground! Maybe a special kind of "terra"...

Martin here is another reference:" Misturar terra a só uma parte do óleo, para após acrescentar ao restante, reduz a capacidade da terra e aumenta seu consumo.".
I am wondering if it is deliberately used for the cleaning process due to its adherence properties?

Shea nut oil refining for clarified oil and butter and I assume Brazil. This terra stuf (or earth) appears to be one of the extracted elements when the oil is being washed, after it has been treated with caustic soda etc.
