Portuguese term

borboleta-penugem

Portuguese to English Science Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) Entymology
This is a term in an indigenous word in a linguistics text I am translating. The gloss is given simply as "butterfly". Thanks!

Sorry Henrique - This is article does not deal with biology at all. You can think of this like a term in a glossary in the sense that there is no context. I'd like an English version that is not scientific, a relatively common simple name if possible. Thanks!
Henrique Serra Jul 10, 2006:
Could you please add some more context to your question, a small piece of the original text maybe? If the name of the species is available, that would be wonderful. AFAIK, borboleta-penugem is not a well-established popular name, at least in Brazilian Portuguese.

Cheers,

Henrique

shaggy butterfly

Not a particular species, just a common name reflecting what it suggests in Portuguese. You might want to check whether the text is in European Portuguese, in which case a more appropriate translation would be simply MOTH, not BUTTERFLY.

Brazilian Portuguese - borboleta = butterfly, mariposa = moth
European Portuguese - borboleta = either butterfly OR moth

butterfly fuzz

I'm wondering if the head noun might be the fuzz and not the butterly. Have a look at the examples below:
