Whitetails live in groups. Within each group there is a boss, or
dominant deer. Each deer has a place in the group, being dominant
to some deer and subordinate to others. Dominance displays
are used to reinforce the rank of an individual deer.
Example sentence:

Deer have such sensitive noses that they may be able to tell the difference between a dominant and a subordinate buck.

If another subordinate buck tries to interfere, the older more mature male will try to chase him away.
