Urban mix

The latest stop on the Arcade Tour sees Kevin Williams return to the suburbs of the UK, visiting the London Borough of Croydon. The mix of commercial and retail is strong and there are plenty of examples of how amusement plays a vital supporting role to the bowling, cinema, gambling, betting and even bingo scene. Backlash Against Diversity? Identity and Cultural Politics in European Cities

Yet the reality, in a globalised and transnational world, is that the city is a site of a fourth vision, of 'mixity', one that many people find deeply disturbing. The paper ends by asking what might be said about the governance of the plural, ethnically heterogeneous, city under conditions of globalisation and mass transnational migration, in the light of these cultural transformations.

Thanks, Caterina
agree Gabrielle Leyden : I think the neologism might be justified. Otherwise, mixture of ethnic groups, mixed ethnic communities, mix of uses, etc., but you have to specify what is "mixed"

Thanks, Gabrielle. I agree that "mixity" sounds a bit like translationese, but it is an accepted term (esp. with "social mixity"), and it could be argued that "urban mix" has more links with the music scene than the make-up of cities.
agree Emma Paulay : Your second ref is particularly good.

melting pot

If this refers to the mixing of cultures and the tendencies related to it, this is a popular term in U.S. English.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melting_pot

The melting pot is an analogy for the way in which heterogenous societies become more homogeneous, in which the ingredients in the pot (people of different cultures, races and religions) are combined so as to develop a multi-ethnic society. The term, which originates from the United States, is often used to describe societies experiencing large scale immigration from many different countries.

It certainly seems to be a lot broader than the population!
