French term

achat 1er prix

French to English Bus/Financial Retail trade fair brochure - description of buyer companies
There is a list of companies attending the trade show with their status as potential purchasers in brackets. They are mainly hypermarkets and supermarkets - mass retailers anyway. Several have "achat 1er prix" in brackets. Does this mean they are discount stores? Or would we say "low-price leader purchaser" or perhaps "cut-price purchaser"? Am looking for the RIGHT word or expression in English - any suggestions welcome. Thanks

discount (supermarket/store)

this is the UK definition of a chain like Lidl. The term 'achat' is odd - you could perhaps say 'retailer' to get round the buying/selling bit

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think discount buyer seems to fit in best - they're talking about the person representing the company at the trade fair and this person's job position so discount buyer would fit. Many thanks to Laurel in particular for her suggestion"

purchaser of low-cost products

"Premier prix" is an outlet's lowest-cost item for any particular product. "First price" you come to when going upwards from zero.

In outlets like Lidl/Aldi ALL products are assumed to be low-cost, in non-discount stores (i.e. Géant, Carrefour, Cora, etc) premier prix refers to the lowest-cost product in any particular category (which are often positioned the lowest shelf, next to the ground), which generally peaking have very simple packaging designs.

"Dans les rayons on trouve généralement un premier prix, un milieu de gamme et parfois un haut-de-gamme."
