L’espace devient un cabinet de curiosité où les gravures éclairent le passé et où les grands cierges, les fumoirs, côtoient les chandeliers et les objets anciens.

French term (edited):
ENfumoir
Selected
bee smoker
Given that a fumoir is either a device or a room for smoking meats or fish, or a room where smokers hammer nails into their coffins, they have to mean another word.
An enfumoir is a "bee smoker", the device beekeepers use for hammering nails into tiny little coffins for their wards.

Here, a fumoir appears to be a device for burning dried lavander :

(not cut/pastable, nor can you search for the word in the text).
I imagine it like those incense burners choir boys swing (at molesting priests).
And here we have fumoir used where enfumoir is meant:
Je me souviens d'un apiculteur , qui ne mettait pas de protections , il avait juste un FUMOIR .Il agissait avec des mouvements lents , observait l'humeur des abeilles en fonction de la météo

: Quite possible if these candles are made of beeswax, otherwise odd.

Comment: "still a bit of a mystery but this is definitely the most likely suggestion, thank you!"

: it is smoking room, if you look at the wikepédia fr ref http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fumoir it clearly states that this room was often situated between the curiosities room and the boudoir.

Discussion
As for 'gravures', I think these are just conventional 'prints' — it seems to me that the writer is making a pun on 'éclairer', with its literal sense of 'to light or illuminate' (i.e. the candles etc.) and its more figurative use of 'to explain' (something that might be done visually by prints hanging on the walls, for example).
Does any of the above make sense in the light of your wider context?
