French term

doublement débattu

French to English Tech/Engineering Nuclear Eng/Sci accident scenarios
Discussion of possible accident scenarios in a PWR:

Cet accident se définit comme une rupture **doublement débattue** de plusieurs tubes d’un même GV cumulée avec une perte totale des alimentations électriques externes au moment de l’Arrêt Automatique du Réacteur.

This phrase has come up twice now and whilst I have been assuming that it means "doubly contentious" or something along those lines, I thought I'd better check whether there was any underlying technical meaning which may have escaped me. It seems such a strange thing to say in any event, given that this is already in the list of highly improbable accidents = maybe that's why it's "doublement débattu"?

I'd appreciate any comments as ever.

Many thanks

double-ended break

Hi Claire, This is what I've got in my glossary. The context I used it in was a break in the reactor coolant system, but perhaps it could apply to the steam generator as well.
Note from asker:
Hi Anna - yes that would make sense; it's just come up again, this time in brackets after rupture complète

There are too many examples of it out there for it no to be technical.

Un autre exemple était l'accident dimensionnant Superphénix pour les feux de sodium : l'hypothèse de la rupture "guillotine" brutale DOUBLEMENT DEBATTUE de la tuyauterie secondaire de plus gros diamètre semble avoir été uniquement justifiée par une contagion venue des REP.

The AFNOR dict. has "rupture circulaire/circonférentielle complète" as "double-ended severance", "rupture guillotine double" as "double-ended guillotine break".

Quite what that means I cannot imagine, given that any break will have two ends I would have thought.

neutral B D Finch : Just guessing, but could this be about an inner and outer tube being broken simultaneously?
