French term

conduites projectives

French to English Art/Literary Music
"Aux confins de la joute spectaculaire organisée, la musique contemporaine favorise des conduites projectives et aiguise de nouvelles stratégies d'écoute"

There is then a reference to the book "The Time of Music, New Meanings, New Temporalities, New Listening Strategies" by Jonathan Kramer, so it may well be a reference to something in there (as "nouvelles stratégies d'écoute" clearly is), but I don't have the book to check.

I think the idea here is that contemporary music encourages artists to project their work, i.e., for more people to come into contact with it. Is that how other people see it?

Discussion

Emma Paulay Nov 13, 2008:
Definition You'll find a definition of "conduite projective" in this link. It backs up your idea, Timothy.

David Vaughn Nov 13, 2008:
Timothy, googling conduites projectives gives some "psychology" hits (though only a few) - this maybe sect psychobable or other theorizing. It is often contrasted (or associated) with conduites perceptives.

Jousting/sharpening Maybe "conduites projectives is meant" as, ahem, "thrusting behaviour". The reference to jousting and sharpening makes me think of duels and brandishing swords. Maybe the idea is that contemporary music can be thrust upon people...
Timothy Barton (asker) Nov 13, 2008:
Maybe... "encourages artists to be more outward-looking". Though I'd like to involve saying "the artists" if possible, since it could be referring to the music industry as a whole, and not just to the artists.

I agree with the intended message posted by Helen.
I believe that the above combination describes the intention better, though...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks. I used "innovative"."

projected pathways

Maybe not quite a literal translation, but I think this is the meaning - projected in the sense of "out into" both spatially and temporally, so perhaps breaking new pathways or new audiences?

projective behavior

i.e. to project oneself in the music and draw from it whatever corresponds you best (same happens with abstract painting for instance)
