Biothérapie

French to English Medical Medical: Health Care
Suivi échographique et IRM dédiée de patients souffrant de polyarthrite rhumatoïde en faible activité sous traitements conventionnels et/ou biothérapies.

Merci d'avance pour votre précieuse aide.
Do you think "TNF inhibitors" could apply there?

Discussion

Michael Barnett Jan 12, 2007:
"alternative" therapies.
Michael Barnett Jan 12, 2007:
Julie, I agree with Angela that TNF inhibitors, also known in English as "biologics" are what is meant here. This is a class of medication used for various sorts of arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. They have no connection whatsoever with...
Angela Dickson (X) Jan 11, 2007:
Hi Julie - TNF inhibitors would probably be the drugs meant here, but I wouldn't be so specific if the French does not specify a drug.

biological therapy

None of the hits for 'biotherapy' have much to do with mainstream medicine, though the term certainly exists in English. See link for details of biological therapy in the treatment of arthritis.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Cetacea : True, but that's just what the text opposes: mainstream medicine and biotherapy ("traitements conventionnels et/ou biothérapies").

not sure the text is opposing the two. Take an example - Google 'rituximab biothérapie' and 'rituximab biological therapy' for an indication that these are equivalent terms. Most of the hits for 'rituximab biotherapy' are French.
neutral Michael Barnett : Cetacea misunderstands. The text refers to conventional mainstream therapy vs the newer mainstream therapies. See my note on the question for "conventional therapy".

agree Eric Bullington : "biological therapy" refers to treatment using biologics, not the biologics themselves, which actually fits this context better.

biologics

Peer comment(s):

agree Michael Barnett : There are several drugs within this class. They are not "alternative" therapies, just unconventional in the sense that they are a new class of pharmaceuticals compared to the old treatments.

merci Michael, pour ce complément d'infos
agree Angela Dickson (X) : yes, and they are also called 'biological therapy' at least in the UK

thank you Angela
agree Eric Bullington : yes, this is the FDA term

alternative treatment/therapy(ies)

...or.....conventional and non-conventional therapy(ies)...the point is that this patient has tried it all...
Peer comment(s):

disagree Angela Dickson (X) : no, 'biothérapie' is not an alternative treatment, it is mainstream.

Angela, I've reviewed my response and the point you make is absolutely valid.
