French term

fixation

French to English Tech/Engineering Media / Multimedia audiovisual/music
The word "fixation" occurs on a couple of occasions in the "exclusive recording contract" I am translating.

First I thought I'd translate it as "reproduction" (based on previous proz entry), but then it occured in a list with "réproduction", so I though maybe "recording" would work, but now I have this sentence which makes me want to find a separate word for "fixation":

Imogen Hancock (asker) Jul 27, 2011:
Thanks for your input "The recording of the recordings" doesn't sound great, but if there's not really any alternative then that's what I'll put.
Tony M Jul 27, 2011:
recording I think you're right, that's what it means here alright; I just don't know if there is any more modern term used in the industry, given the new techniques used these days for storing data... ???

fixation

i.e. fixing in a material form, for example writing something down or committing to a physical container (i.e. tape in the case of a recording).

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fixation in law refers to works entitled to copyright protection (e.g. music, literature, paintings, etc.). Only works fixed in a medium can be copyrighted, not the ideas behind those works.
Note from asker:
I am coming around to this after a bit more googling things like "audio visual fixation" and "fixation of recording". I had previosuly dismissed it after looking at definitions in dictionaries, but I think in this context it may be right.

agree Tony M : I'm not familiar with this specific legal term, but if it is indeed used, then bingo! this is exactly what you need here.

copy

Perhaps 'copy' will be appropriate in the context?

See the link. I am pretty sure that this is what it means specifically, in the sense of "reproduction"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : But 'fixation' has the sense of 'fixing something onto a support medium', so the opposite of reproduction

inscribe/engrave

these days even on a CD, couldn't one refer to the "recording" of something as being "inscribed" or "engraved" on a disc?
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Not really, and in addition, this would hardly work for various methods of data storage, for example.
