French term

politique de l'image

I know exactly what this means (a certain president springs to mind!), but am having a Sunday-afternoon mental block...

.."It was also thought that if Napoleon were portrayed as crowning himself, he would come off as full of himself so David painted Napoleon crowning his wife Josephine." http://library.thinkquest.org/C0110901/optimized/gallery.htm...

B D Finch Jan 19, 2008:
Thanks Gert for that reminder of how dreadful a painter David could be. Of course, as I should have remembered, the painting doesn't actually show Napoleon crowning himself, but his crowning of Josephine a minute or two later.
French Foodie (asker) Jan 19, 2008:
Ah, geez. Just goes to show how out of it I am today being Saturday!
Thanks Gert :-)

Is it really Sunday already? Gosh!

strategy (or politics) of showmanship

In fact, he subscribed to a strategy (or politics) of showmanship which the Emperor was a true master of.

Several ways to put it I think.

propagandist imagery/visual propaganda

With the notable exception of the Death of Marat, this is a side of David's art that I loathe. He was, when not doing dreadful classical, history painting, a wonderful portraitist.
Note from asker:
Propaganda! That was the word on the tip of my tongue!

neutral Najib Aloui : Bonjour, B.D.Terming a message as propaganda is pejorative since it's considered that the message is not sincere informati but manipulation.Propaganda is "massive" in the sense of "gross" and in the sense of destined to the masses.

Propaganda isn't necessarily "mass". Collins: "the organised dissemination of information allegations etc., to assist or damage the cause of a government, movement etc." - perjorative?

misappropriation of art (for political purposes?)

another approach
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : David could hardly "misappropriate" his own work, and art can validly have a political message, even though it must stand or fall on its artistic, rather than its political, merit.

visual propaganda

visual propaganda of the highest order, OR, more colloquially, "major spin."

capitalize on imagery for political ends

I think of something like: "It exemplifies how Napoleon craftily capitalized on...".
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : He didn't craftily capitalise on it; David and his sidekick Gérard deliberately tailored (one could say prostituted) their art for the purpose, N just gratefully accepted and paid for their efforts.
