Discussion

rkillings Feb 13, 2012:
OED gives both alluvia and alluviums as plural forms, indicating no preference.
Ellen Kraus Feb 11, 2012:
should you prefer the plural, I would use alluviA rather than alluviums though the latter is being used but primarily by those who that the verb´s origin is Latin.
Yvonne Gallagher Feb 11, 2012:
I left it as plural since there's so little context (as in aluvial silts/soils/deposits/fans etc) but singular is definitely possible
cchat Feb 10, 2012:
alluvium or alluviums Wouldn't the singular fit better in English?

Quaternary alluvium

extract from Wikipedia

"Most, if not all, alluvium is very young (Quaternary in age), and is often referred to as "cover" because these sediments obscure the underlying bedrock. Most sedimentary material that fills a basin ("basin fill") that is not lithified is typically lumped together in the term alluvial."

Depending on the context and/or for variety, we could use the simpler words, sometimes.
