I don't get the usage of "référence" here , though I obviously understand he overall context.

"Entre chaque patient et suivant la réglementation en vigueur, l'endoscope est désinfecté et les accessoires utilisés sont, soit détruits comme les pinces à biopsie ou les aiguilles (matériel à usage unique), soit stérilisés. Ces procédures font référence pour prévenir d'éventuelles transmissions d'infections."

Ah ha! Thanks for the explanation :-) Was what you found along the same lines as Louise's answer? I meant to mention that sometimes pratiques de référence is translated as best practices, but I don't think that helps here as a best practice is not necessarily implemented, whereas, one would hope, medical equipment is disinfected as a matter of course!
