Discussion

David Salas Oct 14, 2010:
Not behind the times... That would definitely be the understanding in a live game: real money = more substantial amounts.
Tony M Oct 14, 2010:
Right! Thanks for that, David!

I guess I'm behind the times ;-)
David Salas Oct 14, 2010:
@ tony The usual distinction in poker is "play money" versus "real money," as most sites give you the option to play with either.

playing for money

That would be the more natural way of asking the question in EN:

"If so, were you playing for money or not?"
Peer comment(s):

agree Sarah Mathrick : I agree, the most natural way of saying it and avoids the stake/bet question!

agree David Salas : absolutely, or "were you playing for real money?"

Thanks, David! My only concern with your modification might be that it could suggest 'large sums of money', as distinct from small ones???

to bet money

Play poker with money
Money bet
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I'm not sure we say 'bet' when it's poker, do we? I'd have thought perhaps 'to stake' (but see my own suggestion for a possible alternative way of expressing it) / Fair enough, you know best!

They have a specific vocabulary for poker while playing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betting_(poker). But "miser de l'argent" is to bet money. Although, I agree with you for that dialog. It didn't come to my mind at first.
