Discussion

Francis Marche Jan 9, 2015:
"Feu de renvoi" is a fire started to stop the progress of a wildfire. It's not a preventive action. A more standard term is "contre-feu", which is backfire.

controlled, prescribed or hazard reduction burning, back burning or backfire

I think this is controlled burning of leaves, scrub, small growth etc to prevent it creating problems later. Back burning and backfire which seem to me to be a direct equivalent but used less often.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Andrew Bramhall : backfire? I don't think so;

neutral Francis Marche : "prescribed burning" is "brûlage dirigé", a different concept and "feu de renvoi" is not a preventive measure.

agree B D Finch : Yes to "back burning", but not "backfire"

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you Jane. The FAO appears to use both the terms "back burning" and "back fire" frequently when talking about community agroforestry management techniques."

fire repellent

Note from asker:
Thank you Oliver for the references, but I could not find any mention of fire repellents in your cashew reference.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Francis Marche : A fire repellent is a material. "un feu de renvoi" is a fire.

fire barriers

on dit aussi "coupe-feu"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Andrew Bramhall : In that case, how would you translate " pare-feux";

feux de renvoi is a pare feu, the french term is not good
disagree Francis Marche : a fire barrier is a facility, "un aménagement", not a fire.

et donc votre traduction c'est ?????????
disagree B D Finch : Feux de renvoi is not a pare feu!

français term (edited): feux de renvoi

backfire

Check "backfire" in Termium: You'll find "contre-feu" and read the Eng and Fr definition of this F term. That's what "feu de renvoi" is.
