I would gratefully welcome any suggestions as to how to phrase this in the context of an ecological initiative. I was thinking along the lines of "core countryside" but then came unstuck once it started talking about linking them together.
It appears several times under various courses of action to be taken as part of a regional initiative aiming to reduce energy consumption, promote renewable energy sources etc. as well as improving the living environment for residents.
MTIA.

core area
See Natura 2000 site and follow the links from there; I remember a lot of talk about linking core areas via corridors. There are at least three types of wildlife protection areas in the new management schemes but I have no time to look for them for you now. France is very active in this and there's lots of literature on the subject. However, I don't think they are "coeurs" in French, must be a backtranslation of "core". HTH - Gabrielle

Comment: "Gabrielle's support for the whole "core" idea gave me the confidence to go with the idea of a "noyau de biodiversité" described here:
http://developpementdurable.revues.org/document1754.html
The following definition of a "biodiversity hub" seems to fit in nicely with the description of a "coeur de biodiversité" given in the link posted by Rachel:
http://www.wcs.org/media/file/CHBP_lo-res.pdf
Biodiversity hub—These ecological units serve as potential “source” habitats, meaning that
biodiversity within them can help to replenish the biodiversity of nearby “sink” habitats.
Therefore, if connectivity with other habitats is maintained these hubs may help to sustain
biodiversity outside of their borders, throughout the Croton-to-Highlands towns. Key properties
of a biodiversity hub include (1) adequate acreage (at least 1,000 acres) to support species that
require large expanses of habitat; (2) relatively high quality, non-degraded habitat conditions;
and (3) linkages to other landscape units, enabling movement among them (dispersal, migration).
Hence my choice of "biodiversity hubs".
Many thanks to all who helped me reach this answer."

1. natural habitats 2. (natural) habitat management
These would be my suggestions: 1. as a description for coeurs de nature and 2. as a way of describing "relier les coeurs de nature" (e.g. "habitat management aimed at....")

nature reserves
The 'coeur de nature' seems to be a sort of 'slogan' or 'label' rather than a description so you might want/need to be creative. If you google 'blue and green corridors' you get plenty of refs for similar programmes, many of which talk about corridors linking nature reserves.

how big are these "coeurs de nature"?
Assuming they are quite extensive, and not pocket-handkerchief "coeurs de nature", then maybe "natural heartlands" would do the trick.
Of course, looking at the web, "natural heartland" tends to mean "heartland that is natural for someone", so "Graceland is the natural heartland for fans of Elvis", but in your context I think the intended meaning would come across.

natural haven
I am perhaps going a little too poetic here but it might fit the 'precious pockets of green', without the area necessarily being being an official nature reserve

mulling it over, I presume we are looking for a snappier version (for the title at least) of 'areas of unspoilt/natural countryside'.

Note from asker:
thanks, Ormiston - I agree in that we're probably not talking about "nature reserves" here, since it's the project's aim to actually create nature reserves from these "coeurs de nature". |
