one more piece of information

if your chaufferie refers to a home heating system it may also provide the user with a traditional oven, in that case the choice should go to a boiler or an AGA. Do you have AGA boilers in America, in Europe that is often the term used instead of a boiler in spoken English as it is the most expensive thought-after trademark.
I could check what it is in America if boiler on its own is not enough for you.

firewood

The answer here is as simple as possible: they mean the wood which is used for burning in whatever heating systems (either with or without boilers, stoves, ovens furnaces,etc.).

This wood is used purely for extraction of heat energy; it is renewavble since after cleaning a piece of woodland you can expect that some years after you will get again that part of woodland renewed either in artificial (and this is quicker) or natural way.

I spent some years lecturing in Africa and saw by my own eyes how strongly the population there depends namely on that source of energy: they used to apply charcoal for PREPARATION OF FOOD and for the majority of people inhabiting the country there was no any alternative (electricity, gas, domestic kerosine, etc.) for many people. Gracias a Deus, in my apartments we had electric supply, but some African neighbors used charcoal for preparation of food, heating water. etc.
