French term

charges spatiales d’électricité statique

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) static electricity
I want to translate this as 'static electricity space charge' but such a term does not get many googles. I understand the concept of space charges, but wonder if there is another term that would be used here.

This is taken from a document about the cleaning of tanks used for the storage of crude oil and oil products by means of 'dégazage'.

13,900 Ghits for the two terms associated; some at least appear relevant
Tony M Jul 11, 2006:
Uesd as an adjective, I would expect 'static electric space charge', not 'electricity'.
Bruce Popp Jul 11, 2006:
"static electricity space charges" is good, personally I would add a hypen between space charges.

The full stop got included in the link above: try http://www.jci.co.uk/Papers/TankWashingRisks.pdf
David Sirett Jul 11, 2006:
Googling "static electricity" and "space charge" as separate terms in a single search gives quite a few hits, for example this directly relevant one: http://www.jci.co.uk/Papers/TankWashingRisks.pdf. I don't think you need to look for another term.
French2English (asker) Jul 11, 2006:
Thanks, but... ...it's somewhat ambiguous, as it is also an economic term:
Ambient Charge
A form of tax on non uniformly mixed pollutants. It is calculated to be the same in terms of the emission's impact on ambient environmental quality at some receptor site. As a result, an ambient charge to a firm closer to the receptor site will normally be higher per litre than that charged to firms further away.

spatial (space) charges of static electricity

The spatial or space discharge of static electricity is the which results in lightening in space. Static electricity is produced whenever there is friction , be it between you and the car seat, drag your lags on the carpet, etc. It can also be produced by plastic gas cans, nylon wind breakers and so on. all these happen in space and so is termed as spatial. These charges need to be grounded so that they do not result in a fire accident.

EX: Aircraft use static grounding wires before fueling because of the immense amount of static generated during flight. Most of the automotive refueling accidents we have investigated occurred after the refueling process.

YOU MIGHT HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED A STATIC CHARGE IN SPACE, AS YOU BRING YOUR HAND NEAR A RUNNING TV SCREEN OR COMPUTOR MONITOR, WHICH RESULTS SOMETIMES MAKES THE HAIR ON THE HAND TINGLE.
