French term
Art & Essais
French to English
Art/Literary
Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
particular type of film/cinema?
Cinéma XXXX (salle Art & Essais, équipée 3D)
Art & Essais seems to be a widely-used term in the cinema world, less so in tourism!
This is a summer festival event featured in a regional tourist guide, so no further context available.
Whilst this isn't obvious to me - nor is it in the dictionary - I'm sure film buffs will know this instantly, and I'd be jolly grateful if they would pass on their expertise - many thanks!

: "Cinema art et essai" actually has a strict legal framework : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_et_Essai

Comment: "thanks so much everyone! I feel that any one of these answers would have worked in this context, but, bearing in mind the "strict legal framework" (and the reasons for this) described in Catherine's link, this seems the closest in the end"

Note from asker:
thanks Barbara! Without Catherine's link, I would have gone for this, but I feel it is relevant in the context, especially as it actually specifies "salles 'Art & Essai'" |

: jmleger has already suggested this.

I only noticed his suggestion of Indie cinema (which I didn't agree with) when posting. As his mention of art-house seems to only include it as a particular category, I still think my answer is different. Plus I have provided refs.

Art & Experimental
'Essais' with the 's' connotes 'trial', or 'experiment'. In France, this film fare is usually found in 'ciné-clubs'. "Art film' is already an English term.

As Catharine Cellier-Smart has noted in agreeing with the suggestion "Indie cinema", "Art & Essais" is a legal designation for a network of cinemas subsidized by the government to promote films not likely to survive in the commercial entertainment market: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_et_Essai. But Indie, in the most common useage, has more to do with the way a product finds a market. The films that are accepted in France's cinemas qualified "Art & Essais" are clearly art films or experimental films.

Regarding the glossary, you can untick "Match whole words only" to get plural/singular versions of a word.

Note from asker:
thankyou Stéphanie - I had tried the Glossary for Essais without the Art, but not without the final 's'! A good case for making the Glossary a bit more flexible - if such a thing is possible! |
thanks again Stéphanie! In fact, I hadn't grasped the purpose of that box, and will certainly try that next time. Indeed, I'm now wondering why I would ever NOT wish to use it... No doubt enough to keep an exasperated writeaway "sighing" for years to come (re w/a's note below) |
