...ou comme l’image retournée (retour à l’envoyeur) de la dernière séquence de L’Inspecteur Harry.
this is a description of the main character in Gran Torino (played by Clint Eastwood) , which the author says is like his Dirty Harry character.
what do you understand as 'image detournee'? I also think the author is trying to be clever with what he says in parentheses.. it is all lost on me...

Discussion
Since there is no winning Answerer in this case ---
Having said that I appreciate it is out of generosity that people are answering and I want to say a very big thank you to all the people who have helped me. I am deeply grateful. I will try and be more courteous in future and not leave it ages to reply. I totally understand it is annoying for those who have taken the time to answer.
For the record on this one I went with 'recurring image' although I do believe there is also an idea of an image being projected back at the audience. The author in French was able to conflate the two ideas which I was unable to do in the English. Many thanks to all and once again I will make a much bigger effort in the future. Sorry!

I must agree with my colleagues that a confirmation or the reverse would be appreciated. We are here to help, but we are also here to learn.
an alter-image (a counterpoint to his former self)
I imagined the author’s was comparing the "Go ahead punk, make my day" scene in Dirty Harry with Walt’s demise in Gran Torino.
Whatever!
