French term

agriculture d’assurance

French to English Science Agriculture
From a text on farming practices:

Concernant la protection des plantes nous sommes passés d’une agriculture d’assurance (le programme des traitements était préparé en hiver) à une agriculture qui non seulement raisonne et optimise chaque intervention mais également à une agriculture qui intègre la sensibilité des variétés aux maladies et la place de la culture dans la rotation.

I understand what the text is getting at but wondered if there was a specific/accepted term for this kind of farming.

Thanks in advance!

These are good guides, and cool sites! Lots about "nouvelle ag." but not so much about old-style...

conservative farming

That's what I would call it. I don't think "agriculture d'assurance" is a widely used term. I have never heard it and it IS explained in brackets in your text. There may be a better, more specific term, which is why I put a low confidence level, but... faute de mieux, pour l'instant... I think it does keep the idea of old-fashioned practices and doing things the way they have been done for years - playing safe as opposed to trying new ideas.

You could also say 'conservative farming practices' or 'strategies'.

Ok, Michelle, that does sound more precise and in keeping with the French term. Thank you - it's good to know!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you - I heard back from my client that this was actually 'preventive' farming in the sense that pesticide treatments were carried out before there was a pest problem regardless. I think 'conservative' or 'traditional' is in line with that idea as well."

subsistence farming or agriculture

this is the type of farming to avoid famine, then to ensure the daily subsistence
Peer comment(s):

neutral Cetacea : "subsistence farming" is "agriculture de subsistance"; I don't think this is what's meant here.

I know but "assurance" here stands for "insurance against famine"
