English term

final><finals

English Social Sciences Sports / Fitness / Recreation
India is expected to clash with Australia in the finals of the Cricket World Cup.

We use singular form if we are ferering to a single object. Here final is a single object because naturally we have only one match as final.

Could you inform me what is the justification and reason of using *finals* in the above context instead of *final*.

Thanks.

"finals" is the same as "final games..or matches"

However, worldwide, the word "finals" is far common...in almost all sports.
Luck!

Sorry!
That should read: \"far more common\".

thank you
neutral awilliams : there were no quarter finals but a "super six" stage; semis due to be played this week. It is expected that Aus and In will win their respective finals and move through to the final-one single match-sorry!:)

I concur, I have no idea about cricket, but it was an example to illustrate the concept at hand: a number of elimination rounds leading to the single final, thus finals or plural for the whole.

finals

This particular game is part of a series of games. So the plural is used to describe the entire series of games that ends in one game.

The final series

It is possible that India will clash with Australia in only one event, but that one event is part of the "finals."

quarter finals...

The 'finals' refers to any of the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final tornament. The 'final' (sing) is just the last match(game).

"finals" - just English usage

I was just about to agree with a colleague - and he erased his answer - come back!

The Cricket World Cup :
There were no quarter finals but a "super six" stage; semis due to be played this week. It is expected that Aus and In will win their respective finals and move through to the final-one single match.

Australia are playing Sri Lanka and India playing Kenya. The winners will go through to the final.

As my colleague said, the use of "finals" is just common English usage.

They are talking about the last round here.

NB- this particular instance may depend on publication date. If this was published 3 months ago, \"finals\" may have referred to the whole World Cup. However if published within the last few days the above would be correct.
