(Description of a rifle):
Primary extraction* was weak and coped badly with cartridges on the edge of manufacturing tolerance.
- Can anyone tell me what "on the edge of manufacturing tolerance" means here?
* After the bullet and powder are gone, the brass case left behind must be loosened from the chamber walls. This is known as "primary extraction".
Thanks in advance.

\"Tolerance\" is roughly defined as the amount of error or variance allowed for the size, weight or dimensions for a manufactured product. If a product is expected to be a certain size or weight it is usually manufactured within a certain tolerance, a little larger than expected is OK, a little smaller is also OK, it depends on the product. Say that a certain product is expected to measure 5mm and the range of tolerance is considered to be + / - .5 mm. This means that anything from 4.5 mm up to 5.5mm will be deemed acceptable. The reason for this is that even though modern manufacturing techniques allow a certain degree of precision it is still a fact that the end product will always vary slightly. Products that fall within the established tolerance, even if not \"perfect\", will be kept and products that don\'t will be rejected. In your example above the cartridges that were involved were either slightly too small or slightly too large or, in some way, didn\'t meet the manufacturing standard and, because of this were causing the primary extraction process to malfunction. HTH.

Your asker notes above showed me that you got it. Yes, it\'s \"leeway etc.\". Things like dishes, widgets, household gadgets have a very low tolerance, things like armaments, precision tools and military aircraft have a very high tolerance. Expected product size, weight, dimensions etc. after manufacturing (within a certain, defined range) is the meaning. HTH.

at the limit of acceptable tolerance
The way I read this is that the cartridges were at the limit of manufacturing tolerance, that is, they were barely acceptable, hence the difficulty. Note that tolerance is especially important with components that fit together such as pipe joints, bolts and nuts, etc. So in your case, the cartridges also fit in this category (no pun intended).

: This answer is also perfectly acceptable and explains it well, in another way. Good job.
