Pelobates fuscus (broasca sãpãtoare brunã). Descriere: Specie de dimensiuni mici (maximum 7-8 cm),
cu corpul îndesat, ochii proeminenþi cu pupila verticalã. Dorsal are culoare brun-deschisã, cu pete mari,
longitudinale brun-închise. Pe picioarele din spate gãsim doi tuberculi cu ajutorul cãrora poate sãpa. Mod de
viaþã: Broasca sãpãtoare este o specie nocturnã, care trãieºte numai în zonele cu sol afânat. Ziua stã în
pãmânt, în gãuri pe care le sapã singurã. Se hrãneºte cu insecte (greieri, gândaci, etc.). Depune ouãle în
luna mai, larvele fiind cele mai mari larve de amfibieni din România (pânã la 10 cm). Hiberneazã în sol, la
adâncime de cca. 1 m. Este vânatã de numeroase pãsãri acvatice (berze, stârci), rãpitoare de noapte
(bufniþe, cucuvele), mamifere mici (hermelina, nevãstuica). Rãspândire: Este o specie rarã, deºi trãieºte în
toate regiunile României.
