agree Tony M : Pigtails, as we used to call them; Phil, this is just the US spelling of the FR word "queue". 'Queue' is just the FR word for a 'tail'; cf pigtail / pony tail

Thank you Tony. I thought of using “pigtail”, but recalled that the plural form was more common. I suppose queue/cue because of the lining of knots.

Cues or queues were part of a hairstyle. Braids works too.
