Hi subtitlers, I was recently asked for translation of a VTT file from English into French and Croatian. We worked hard on maintaining the format of the VTT file - which after all is simply a .txt - but we ended up failing miserably to create a target file that the customer could use.

What is it about VTT files that gets mangled when you edit them in a CAT tool?
What software tool should we have used to create a target VTT file?

Hi Gill,

VTT is just a web version of SRT with some differences. You can get acquainted with the spec here: https://w3c.github.io/webvtt/#other-features

Or you can simply copy and paste the first several lines of your document, so that we can point at what's wrong with the file.

Unfortunately, the French text has a lot of capital letters in it and unusual characters. The formatting is different to with extra lines of space that we did not have in the last test file you sent through.
