Un overland atravesando Centroamérica, volcanes, selvas, montañas, mercados indígenas, culturas
antiguas, ciudades mayas y playas. Ascenderemos al Volcan Pacaya, Navegaremos por el Lago Atitlan,
escucharemos la lengua Maya y nos envolverán los olores del rocío mientras caminamos en lo más profundo del Parque Nacional Celaque.
Chichicastenango, Antigua, Atitlán, Suchitoto, León, Granada, Ometepe, Arenal, la gente y sus gestos, sus ropas, sus casas.
Combinamos en esta expedición la aventura de un recorrido en nuestro propio vehículo fuera de las rutas
clásicas, con caminatas por montañas, con el conocimiento de Ciudades coloniales, comunidades, playas de ensueño, bosques nubosos, lagos y mercados indígenas.
Descubrimos las gran ciudad maya de Copán, oculta por la selva y con miles de sonidos que nos transportarán a otras épocas. Volcanes activos en la Cordillera Central como el Arenal y la costa casi inexplorada de la Bahía Salinas, ideal para relajaros tras vivir tantas experiencias.

ITINERARIO PREVISTO:
Día 1.- Vuelo Madrid-GUATEMALA. Traslado a ANTIGUA (45 min., 45 km). Hotel. Llegaremos por la noche ya cansados, vueltecilla para los que tengan aún ganas y los que no pues a descansar en el hotel.
Día 2.- ANTIGUA. El corazón colonial de América lugar único para empezar la gran ruta. El primer contacto con la cultura Maya aunque la ciudad es más bien cosmopolita. Totalmente restaurada y llena de vida, Antigua es el centro cultural de Guatemala. Mantiene joyas de la época colonial como Iglesias, ruinas de conventos convertidas en maravillosos hoteles, volcanes que la rodean y calles para perderse. Museo de Arte Colonial en la antigua universidad,
recomendado. Hotel.
Día 3.- Antigua. Saldremos temprano en la mañana rumbo al VOLCAN PACAYA (1 h, 50 km) para intentar subirlo. Son
unas cinco horas a paso tranquilo, entre subir y bajar y paradas, y el desnivel de unos 800 metros desde la base. Es un
Volcán activo y el paisaje de la subida así como el que se contempla desde la cima son espectaculares. Por la tarde,
camino hacia el pueblo indígena de Chichicastenango (3h. 150 km)
Día 4.- CHICHICASTENANGO –Lago Atitlán Ya en Chichicastenango visitaremos su mercado más conocido. Caminar
hacia el antiguo lugar de ofrendas de Pascal Abaj. “Chichi” es mucho más que un mercado para turistas, podemos decir
que éste es absorbido por el mercado propio, de las gentes de la región que vestidos con sus ropas más coloridas bajan
de las pequeñas aldeas de las montañas mayas para vender y comprar sus mercancía. Un gratísimo recuerdo, seguro
que no podréis olvidar el color y olor, las estrechas callejuelas y la iglesia donde se celebran ritos sincréticos (mezcla de
catolicismo y religión maya) y el humo de la resina del pino local nos envuelve en el misterio de otras culturas que aún
están vivas. Desde allí iremos a uno de los lugares más bellos del mundo. Un lago azul rodeado de volcanes y montañas
verdes y moteado de pueblecitos blancos con fuerte tradición local.
Día 5.- Recorrido del LAGO ATITLAN. Día fabuloso para cruzar el lago en una lancha de motor para el grupo y visitar
Santiago donde está el Maximón, un muñeco relacionado directamente con los ritos de la prosperidad y la salud.
Conoceréis el entorno del lago y sus gentes. Por la tarde regresamos a Santa Catarina. Hotel.
Día 6.- Atitlán –Antigua (2h. 80 km) . Regreso a Antigua. Últimas horas para despedirnos de de esta ciudad y de
Guatemala. Podéis aprovechar e ir al mercado local y, cerca de allí, a la Casa de Jade, donde se muestra y se vende
artículos realizados con esta piedra, tradicional desde los inicios de la civilización maya debido, entre otras cosas, a la
carencia de metales en esa zona. Hotel en Antigua.
Día 7.- Antigua – COPÁN (HONDURAS) (6 h., 350 km). Tomaremos la Panamericana y bajamos de las tierras altas al
Valle del Río Motagua donde agarramos la Carretera del Atlántico. Durante este viaje cambiamos completamente de
ecosistema entrando en el bosque tropical seco del entorno del Motagua, con enormes cactus y un calor mucho más
seco. Por las montañas cruzamos a Honduras en busca de las mayores estelas del mundo. Un paso de fronteras fácil en el que sólo hay que presentar el pasaporte pero en el que no hay ni sello. Llegamos a Copán Ruinas que es como se llama el pueblo que está junto a la antigua ciudad Maya de Copán, un lugar con muchísimo color local, calles de adoquines, casas con patio y pequeños restaurantes donde relajarse en una hamaca mientras nos tomamos algo fresco. Hotel.
Día 8.- Copán. Exploramos la mítica CIUDAD MAYA. Uno de los mejores yacimientos arqueológicos de la cultura maya.
Fue una gran ciudad que floreció en las artes y las ciencias y dejó un legado artístico importante. Se pueden ver en
perfecto estado el campo de pelota, las escalinatas trabajadas con unos relieves sorprendentes en los que se narra la
historia de los gobernantes de este pueblo y varias pirámides y templos. Merece la pena dedicarle un tiempo y
ensoñarse directamente con el calor y los sonidos de la jungla imaginando cómo pudo ser la vida allí. Hay un pequeño
sendero que cruza el bosque tropical y que nos lleva directamente al museo. Resto del día libre. Como opcional podéis
alquilar unos caballos y dar una vuelta por los alrededores que son bellísimos. Hotel.
Día 9.- Copán- Santa Rosa de Copán- GRACIAS (total recorrido bus día: 5 h.) Por una remota carretera nos acercamos
a Santa Rosa de Copán (3 1/2 h.), una pequeña ciudad en las montañas del sur de Honduras por donde apenas pasan
turistas. Su centro histórico está muy bien conservado y daremos un paseo por él. Luego seguimos ruta hacia el sur, (1
½ h.). Una pequeña perla olvidada de la época colonial bajo las montañas: GRACIAS. La pequeña y antigua ciudad tiene
las calles adoquinadas y portalones de madera con viejos escudos nobiliarios de sus primeros habitantes. Un reducto
tranquilo y desconocido desde el que entrar a los bosques cercanos. Este día tendremos la oportunidad de visitar la
Campa, pequeña localidad cercana a Gracias y que cuenta con una bellísima iglesia colonial. Hotel.
Día 10.- Trek en el PARQUE NACIONAL CELAQUE. Un día magnífico en las olvidadas montañas de este parque. Tiene
una extensión enorme y sus bosques nublados llegan hasta los 2.827 m, un lugar mágico donde habitan todavía desde
jaguares a quetzales. No es fácil ver animales pero el paisaje es asombroso. Caminaremos unas 5/6 horas. Si el grupo

Día 11.- Gracias-SUCHITOTO (EL SALVADOR). Por pistas de tierra atravesamos las montañas hasta Suchitoto, una
perla colonial a orillas de un agradable lago. Hotel.
Día 12.- Suchitoto. Calles empedradas, iglesias coloniales y ambiente bohemio. Día para disfrutar de este privilegiado
enclave. Hotel.
Día 13.- Suchitoto-LEÓN (NICARAGUA). Día largo de ruta en nuestro bus, unas 10 horas aprox. Cruzamos la frontera y
entramos en Nicaragua por la hospitalaria León. Ciudad bohemia, colonial y acogedora como pocas. Éste es un día
duro de traslado, pero la recompensa de la estancia en León merece la pena. Hotel.
Día 14.- Visita de LEÓN Museos, iglesias, exposiciones y clubs de música. Un lugar que os cautivará, ciudad de
músicos y poetas, revoluciones y aventuras. Gente amable, hogar del gran poeta Rubén Darío y encendida de ambiente
en sus noches cálidas con tabernas donde se canta y se escucha la guitarra hasta bien entrada la madrugada. Hotel.
Día 15.- León-GRANADA (3h. aprox.) Junto al Lago Nicaragua y rodeada de volcanes, la ciudad más antigua de
América, “la gran sultana” ambicionada por piratas, políticos y artistas nos recibe. No os defraudará, sus palacios
restaurados tras el saqueo de los piratas, su plaza llena de vida y los conventos e iglesias en una ciudad que vive entre
el gran Lago y el Volcán. Haremos una excursión por el Volcán Masaya. Hotel.
Día 16.- Granada. Visita de la ciudad. Recorremos la ciudad a pie con nuestro guía. Visitaremos todos los lugares
interesantes metiéndonos un poco más allá para sentir el pulso de este lugar especial. Campanarios, museos, fuertes y
casonas coloniales endulzadas con las terrazas de hoteles coloniales donde descansar y recuperar fuerzas con un
roncito de la tierra “Flor de Caña”. Hotel.
Día 17.- Granada-ISLA DE OMETEPE. Desde Granada nos acercamos a Rivas para tomar el ferry local rumbo a la Isla
de Ometepe. Una explosión de naturaleza y sosiego en esta isla del Lago Nicaragua. Caminatas, kayaks y baños bajo
espectaculares atardeceres. Hotel.
Día 18.- ISLA DE OMETEPE. Libre para actividades. Un día propicio para mover el cuerpo y ponernos a tono. Desde el
lodge en la playa del lago podemos salir a recorrer la costa de la isla en nuestros kayaks o caminar por la reserva natural
donde gritan los monos aulladores. Para los más cañeros es posible contratar guía para la subida a uno de los dos
volcanes de la isla. Por favor, consultad con vuestro guía. Hotel
Día 19.- Ometepe – Guanacaste (COSTA RICA) (3h aprox). De nuevo atravesaremos en ferry y tomaremos rumbo a
Costa Rica.Disfrutaremos de las playas del Pacífico. Relax y chapuzones.
Día 20.- Playa Hermosa. Día libre para disfrutar de la costa o para ver naturaleza en estado puro en el P.N. Rincón de la
Vieja. Hermosas playas, manglares, y mucha vida salvaje.
Día 21.- Guanacaste-ARENAL (3,5h aprox). Volcán Arenal uno de los conos más perfectos del mundo. Hotel.
Día 22.- VOLCAN ARENAL- Visitaremos este volcán y su espectacular parque nacional.. Libre para cabalgar, caminar y
acabar en las termas relajados y reflexionando sobre lo vivido días atrás. Hotel.
Día 23.- Arenal – San José. Nos trasladamos a la capital costarricense. Alojamiento en hotel.
Día 24.- Traslado al aeropuerto para tomar el vuelo internacional. Noche en vuelo
Día 25.- Llegada a España.

2015 PROPOSAL
A road trip around Central America, volcanoes, jungles, mountains, indigenous markets, ancient cultures, Mayan cities and beaches. We will go up Pacaya Volcano, we will sail on Lake Atitlán, we will hear the Mayan language and we will surround ourselves with the smell of the dew as we walk in the deepest Celaque National Park.
Chichicastenango, Antigua, Atitlán, Suchitoto, León, Granada, Ometepe, Arenal, the people and their gestures, their clothes, their houses.
On this trip we combine adventure on a journey in our own vehicle away from the classic routes, with mountain treks, with getting to know colonial cities, communities, dream beaches, cloud forests, lakes and indigenous markets.
We discover the great Mayan city of Copán, hidden in the jungle with thousands of sounds that will transport us to another age. Active volcanoes in the Central Mountain Range, such as Arenal, and the rarely explored coast of Bahía Salinas, ideal for relaxing after having so many experiences.

PLANNED ITINERARY
Day 1.- Flight Madrid-GUATEMALA Transfer to ANTIGUA (45 min., 45 km). Hotel. We will arrive by night already tired, a small walking tour for those who want to, while for those who don't, a rest in the hotel.
Day 2.- ANTIGUA. The colonial heart of America and the only place to start the grand tour. Our first contact with Mayan culture, although the city is rather cosmopolitan. Completely restored and full of life. Antigua is the cultural centre of Guatemala. It contains jewels of the colonial era such as churches and ruined convents converted into luxury hotels; it is surrounded by volcanoes and has streets to get lost in. Colonial Art Museum and the old university, recommended. Hotel.
Day 3.- Antigua. We will leave early in the morning, headed for PACAYA VOLCANO (1h, 50 km), to attempt to climb it. It’s roughly a five-hour, easy walk with ups, downs and stops, and a total ascent of some 800 metres from the base. It’s an active volcano, and the landscape on the ascent, as well as what you can see from the summit, is spectacular. In the afternoon, we drive to the indigenous town of Chichicastenango (3h. 150 km)
Day 4.- CHICHICASTENANGO –Lake Atitlán Once in Chichicastenango we will visit its well-known market. We'll walk to the ancient sacrificial offering place of Pascual Abaj. “Chichi” is much more than a market for tourists, we could say this is just part of the locals' own market, to which people from all over the region come down in their colourful clothes, from the small villages of the Mayan mountains, to buy and sell their wares. A pleasant memory, you surely won’t forget the colour and smells, the narrow streets and the church where ancient rites are celebrated (mixing Catholicism with Mayan religion), and the smoke of resin from the local pine wraps everything in the mystery of other cultures that remain alive. From there, we will go to one of the world’s most beautiful places. A blue lake surrounded by volcanoes and green mountains, dotted with white villages and a strong local tradition.
Day 5.- Circuit of LAKE ATITLAN. A fabulous day to cross the lake in the group’s private motorboat, and to visit Santiago, where we will find Maximón, an effigy related directly to the rites of prosperity and health. You will discover the surroundings of the lake and its people. In the afternoon we return to Santa Catarina. Hotel.
Day 6.- Atitlán –Antigua (2h. 80 km) . Return to Antigua. Last chance to say goodbye to this city and to Guatemala. You can enjoy the local market, and nearby, the House of Jade, where they show and sell items made from this stone, which has been prized since the dawn of the Mayan civilisation, due, among other things, to the lack of other metals in the area. Hotel in Antigua.
Day 7.- Antigua – COPÁN (HONDURAS) (6 h., 350 km). We will take the Pan-American and leave the high ground, heading towards the Motagua River valley, where we take the Atlantic Highway. During this journey we completely change ecosystems, entering the dry tropical forest surrounding the Motagua, with enormous cacti and a much drier heat. We cross into Honduras via the mountains, in search of the world’s best stelae. An easy border crossing where you only have to show your passport but there isn't even a stamp. We arrive at Copán Ruinas, which is the name of the modern village alongside the ancient Mayan city of Copán; a place with much local colour, cobblestone streets, houses with balconies and small restaurants where you can relax in a hammock with a refreshing drink. Hotel.
Day 8.- Copán. We explore the mythical MAYAN CITY. One of the best archaeological sites in Mayan culture. It was a great city which flourished in arts and sciences, and left an important artistic legacy. You can see in perfect condition the ball field, the stairways with surprising reliefs in which the story is told of the governors of these people, and various pyramids and temples. It's worth spending time daydreaming in the heat and sounds of the jungle, imagining what life might have been like there. There is a small path which crosses the tropical forest and takes us directly to the museum. Rest of the day free. There is an option to hire horses and ride around the area, which is beautiful. Hotel.
Day 9.- Copán- Santa Rosa de Copán- GRACIAS (total bus journey: 5 h.) By means of a remote road, we head for Santa Rosa de Copán (3 1/2 h), a small city in the mountains of southern Honduras which hardly any tourists visit. Its historic centre is well preserved and we will have a look round it. Then we follow the road to the south, (1 ½ h.). A forgotten jewel of the colonial area at the foot of the mountains: GRACIAS. This small old city has paved streets and wooden gates featuring the shields of the nobility and the town’s first inhabitants. It is a quiet and unknown haven, from which to enter the nearby woods. Today we will have the opportunity to visit La Campa, a small community near Gracias, with one of the most beautiful colonial churches. Hotel.
Day 10.- Trek in CELAQUE NATIONAL PARK. A magnificent day in the forgotten mountains of this park. It is expansive, with cloud forests reaching 2,827 metres above sea level, a magical place where you can find jaguars and quetzals. It is not easy to spot animals but the landscape is amazing. We will walk for 5/6 hours. If the group is in good shape and if the weather allows, we can try to climb higher and the walk would last approximately 8 hours. On returning to Gracias, we will go for a soak in the thermal baths near the town, where the waters are warm and the environment unique. Hotel.
Day 11.- Gracias-SUCHITOTO (EL SALVADOR). Using dirt roads, we cross the mountains towards Suchitoto, a colonial pearl on the shore of a pleasant lake. Hotel.
Day 12.- Suchitoto. Cobbled streets, colonial churches and a Bohemian atmosphere. A day to enjoy this privileged enclave. Hotel.
Day 13.- Suchitoto-LEÓN (NICARAGUA). A long day on the road in our bus, approx. 10 hours. We cross the border and enter Nicaragua at the welcoming district of León. A bohemian, colonial city which is friendly like few others. This is a tough day of travelling, but the reward of a stay in León will be worth it. Hotel.
Day 14.- Visit LEÓN Museums, churches, exhibitions and music clubs. A place that will captivate you, a city of musicians and poets, revolutionaries and adventurers. Friendly people, home of the great poet Rubén Dario, alive with atmosphere on warm nights, with bars where they sing and play guitar until the early hours of the morning. Hotel.
Day 15.- León-GRANADA (3h. approx.) On the shore of Lake Nicaragua and surrounded by volcanoes, the oldest city in America, “the Great Sultana” awaits us – a city desired by pirates, politicians and artists. It will not disappoint; its palaces were restored following their sacking by the pirates, its square is full of life, and there are convents and churches in a city that lives between the Lake and the Volcano. We will take a trip to Masaya Volcano. Hotel.
Day 16.- Granada. Tour of the city. We will explore the city on foot with our guide. We will visit all the interesting sites and go a bit beyond the normal things to get a feel for the pulse of this special place. Bell towers, museums, forts and colonial mansions, plus the terraces of colonial hotels when we can relax and rejuvenate with a little local “Flor de Caña” rum. Hotel.
Day 17.- Granada-OMETEPE ISLAND. From Granada we move towards Rivas to take the local ferry to Ometepe Island. There’s an explosion of nature and quiet on this island in Lake Nicaragua. Trekking, kayaking, and bathing beneath spectacular sunsets. Hotel.
Day 18.- OMETEPE ISLAND. Free for activities. An ideal day for moving our bodies and getting ourselves fit. From the lodge at one of the beaches on the lake we can go out along the coast of the island in our kayaks, or walk in the nature reserve where howler monkeys cry. For the more energetic, it’s possible to recruit a guide to take us up one of the two volcanoes on the island. Please consult your guide. Hotel
Day 19.- Ometepe – Guanacaste (COSTA RICA) (3h approx). We will take the ferry again and head to Costa Rica, where we will enjoy the beaches of the Pacific. Relax and have a dip in the sea.
Day 20.- Playa Hermosa. Free day to enjoy the coast or to see pure nature in the Rincón de la Vieja National Park. Beautiful beaches, mangroves and much wildlife.
Day 21.- Guanacaste-ARENAL (3,5h approx). Arenal Volcano is one of the most perfect cones in the world. Hotel.
Day 22.- ARENAL VOLCANO. We will visit this volcano and its spectacular national park. Free to go horse-riding, walk and end up in the thermal baths, relaxing and reflecting on what's been done these last few days. Hotel.
Day 23.- Arenal – San José. We transfer to the Costa Rican capital. Accommodation in hotel.
Day 24.- Transfer to the airport to take the international flight. Night on the plane.
Day 25.- Arrival in Spain.
Note: the order of visits in the first days of the itinerary could change. This is to make the visit to Chichicastenango coincide with the days when the market is open (Thursday or Sunday)
