Computer Numerical Control (CNC) is a system that uses a computer to automatically control the operations of a machine tool. A CNC machine's computer executes a part program stored in its memory, causing motorized drives to move the various parts of the machine to cut the workpiece without the need of human intervention.
CNC is applied to most types of machine tool processes. CNC machines are the dominant method used in production machining today. They are preferred over manual machines because they machine parts to more precise dimensions, produce parts with fewer defects, and produce parts faster. Additionally, they can produce complex part features that could not be replicated by a human operator.
Spindle
The spindle is the component that rotates the tool at high speed to perform the cutting operations on the workpiece. A vertical CNC mill's spindle is mounted vertically while a horizontal CNC mill's spindle is mounted horizontally. The spindle accepts tools mounted in special tool holders that allow the tools to be quickly changed by an automatic tool changer. An electric motor (spindle motor) rotates the spindle. The spindle's rotation speed and direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) are controlled automatically by signals from the controller, or manually using controls on the operator panel. The spindle is mounted to a vertical axis that moves the spindle up and down. An axis defines a linear, or sometimes circular, direction of movement.
