Text d'origen - Anglès Up till now the civil war had not shown its more terrible aspect; soon, however, its grimmer side began to appear. My first contact with the front was in Aragon on the Huesca sector. I travelled up and down the line looking for a suitable location for our medical unit.
I became familiar with the little stone villages where the various militia columns had their headquarters, and I spent many hours bumping over those stretches of soft dust, big boulders, and deep holes which the inhabitants of the remoter parts of Aragon agree to call roads.
After a time I realised one remarkable thing. I had seen no munition dumps. Occasionally, very occasionally, I passed a lorry with a few boxes of rifle or machine-gun ammunition. There was no artillery visible nor any signs of artillery having passed by or being in the neighbourhood. Afterwards, I had abundant proof of the scarcity of Government artillery on every front. Occasionally a single plane flew over on some bombing or reconnoitring flight behind the enemy’s lines.
Later, on the Madrid front, I saw one of these bombers start. It was an ordinary passenger plane with a covered top out of which it would have been quite impossible to fire a machine-gun. This had not much importance, however, as even if it had been possible to use one there was no machine-gun available.
Bombs were piled into the plane, and when the objective was reached they had to be thrown out of the door by hand.
This improvised bomber plane went off to do its job without the usual escort of chaser planes to protect it.

Mi primer contacto con el frente fue en Aragón, en el sector de Huesca. Viajé de un extremo a otro de la línea en busca de un emplazamiento adecuado para nuestra unidad médica.
Me familiaricé con aquellos pueblecitos de piedra en los que se albergan los cuarteles generales de las columnas de la milicia y pasé largas horas dando tumbos por esos tramos de arenilla, pedruscos y socavones que los habitantes de las zonas más recónditas de Aragón tienen a bien llamar carreteras.
Al cabo de un tiempo reparé en un hecho digno de mención: no había visto ningún arsenal. Ocasionalmente, muy ocasionalmente, adelanté a algún camión cargado con unas pocas cajas de munición para rifles o ametralladoras. No había artillería a la vista; tampoco indicios de que alguna acabase de pasar o se encontrase en los aledaños del lugar. Más adelante comprobaría con creces la escasez de artillería del Gobierno, patente en cada uno de los frentes. De vez en cuando pasaba un único avión que se dirigía a efectuar algún bombardeo o vuelo de reconocimiento tras líneas enemigas.
Más tarde, en el frente de Madrid, pude ver en acción a uno de estos bombarderos. Se trataba de un avión ordinario de pasajeros con una cubierta desde la que era imposible disparar una ametralladora. Esto, sin embargo, no tenía demasiada importancia: aunque se hubiese podido, no había ametralladoras disponibles.
Las bombas se apilaban en el interior del avión y, cuando se
alcanzaba un objetivo, debían lanzarse manualmente desde la compuerta.
Este bombardero improvisado fue a hacer su trabajo sin la habitual escolta de los cazas.
