Watch out for "Jennifer Spiegel" from Apex Publishing.
Almost ate it – everything looked relatively legit, the e-mail came from a registered site, except that they were offering 3000 GBP for 7000 words and the site was registered 8 days ago.

Thank you! Ap&& (according to Proz rules I can’t name names and I don’t want this thread to be shut down immediately) seems to be a very popular name among scammers because on the same address there are a few other Ap&& businesses (banks, financial institutions...).

| Apex publishing, Jennifer and Vertex - worried about my personal info | Dec 3, 2025 |
I had my own unpleasant experience with Apex Publishing and Vertex Global Payments only yesterday.
I was approached for the translation of Mark Twain's Eve's diary to Macedonian.
And I did the job.
And they paid the entire promised payment on the platform and then asked for the "fee", promised to be refunded, for me to be able to transfer the payment to my bank account.

And I did the job.

Of course, I realized the situation and I did not pay and asked for the account to be deleted - after that they gave two options - for me to record a video holding an ID card saying I want the account deleted or to pay 67 EUR to have the account deleted and to be sent proof. I didn't do this, of course. But I am worried that they manipulate with data and documents.
Three people were involved - Jennifer, a payment manager and site support, at least that is what it seemed like. The sites look professional, but they are "registered" on the same address in Virginia, where nothing exists.
What I am worried about now is that they have my personal data because they asked for a passport scan.
Did anyone have a similar situation with them or with anyone else and did anyone experience any inconveniences with data abuse from these scams?
It is just terrifying to think what they could use my info for.

If anybody else uses *your* personal data, that's impersonation. Sometimes scammers use that data to keep scamming other people.
Then a more serious thing is if they use *your* personal data to create accounts on your behalf; that's identity theft, and you can report that to the police.

Same here. I was approached by Jennifer Spiegel, Apex Publishing Services - the same Mark Twain text other people received and a PO with a sum that more than twice of what I had quoted. Thank you for making me aware!!!

I was asked to do that job, too. I call it the "Mark Twain scam". They claimed they were from TransPerfect, but they weren't. They said a private investor wanted a new translation. After I did the job, they showed a fake PDF of a TransferWise order. I knew at this point it wasn't real because it's now called Wise. They didn't get any money from me. There was a person named Jan, so that might be Jen. I reported it to the authorities but PROZ doesn't even mention it.

Of course 'everything looked relatively legit' ... Say a bit 'thank you' for that to AI.
There are now plenty of very legitimate companies that will help you to build for you a very good looking website using AI and their templates. And often you can even have it for free during a trial period. Perfect for scammers who will just close their website before the end of the 'free trial period' - if they don’t get shut down before - and simply 'rinse and repeat' by making another scam website using another 'free trial period' elsewhere.
You could always write to the whoever registered the domain name Apexpub.co and especially to [email protected] who made the website for them to get them to shut down these scammers. But it’s like a Whack-A-Mole game - they will simply move to the next 'offer for a free website'.
The only real solution is to learn how to improve your 'due diligence' - THAT is never 'wasted time' ... the Scam section of Forums is as good as starting point as any other …
