The development of creative places and creative quarters is a distinctive dimension of the wider regeneration narrative, privileging smaller-scale initiatives in contrast to the dominant focus on big infrastructure projects.
Creative placemaking as a term emerged from the US (Markusen & Gadwa, 2009), where it was argued that developing the cultural and creative presence in a city or district would be followed by growth in the economy, vibrancy and community resilience. Although its most concrete formulations and testing have been applied to the US context, the ideas are recapitulated in urban cultural discourses and policies elsewhere. Its most ambitious formulation is in a White Paper on Creative Placemaking produced for the Mayors’ Institute on City Design at the instigation of the National Endowment for the Arts. It is worth quoting at length because so many elements are bound up in it.
In creative placemaking, partners from public, private, non- profit, and community sectors strategically shape the physical and social character of a neighborhood, town, city, or region around arts and cultural activities. Creative placemaking animates public and private spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability and public safety, and brings diverse people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired. In turn, these creative locales foster entrepreneurs and cultural industries that generate jobs and income, spin off new products and services, and attract and retain unrelated businesses and skilled workers. Together, creative placemaking’s livability and economic development outcomes have the potential to radically change the future of American towns and cities […]. Instead of a single arts center or a cluster of large arts and cultural institutions, contemporary creative placemaking envisions a more decentralized portfolio of spaces acting as creative crucibles. In each, arts and culture exist cheek-by-jowl with private sector export and retail businesses and mixed-income housing, often occupying buildings and lots that had been vacant and under-used. (Markusen & Gadwa, 2010 p.3).
A series of overlapping themes thus come together. The first is that creative places attract tourists and visitors to a
district, because it is a culturally vibrant part of ‘the experience economy’. In their manifesto for the experience economy,
Pine and Gilmore insist that ‘the staging of experiences must be pursued as a distinct form of economic output’ (Pine & Gilmore, 2011, p.ix). The second theme is that creative quarters or clusters where creative industries coalesce benefit the industries while also reinforcing these creative places. The third is that creative places are environments where something
that Florida named ‘the creative class’ wants to live, with the first two themes being part of what makes a place attract them. Florida’s formulation sees creative people rather than corporations as now being the drivers of economic growth, which means that cities should concentrate on the amenities and atmosphere that will attract them (Florida, 2004; Florida et al, 2015). The core criticism is that it lumps together under a single term about one-third of the workforce, from managers and lawyers to artists and technicians, from accountants and dancers to designers and social workers, occupations whose lifestyles, mobility, tastes and politics are far more diverse than the theory allows, while it proposes causal relationships that may actually work in other directions. An assessment with respect to UK cities concluded that, although some individual points were valid, there was little evidence of a single creative class in the UK, nor of its potential impact in the way that Florida proposes. ‘What’s true we already knew. What’s new is probably not true.’ (Nathan, 2005).
Culture and the creative industries thus often find themselves within a vision of the new economy that combines science, knowledge, creativity and culture, but in a mix that leaves the actual role of arts and culture unclear. As Evans has asked, are they part of the economy, are they a necessary context for the creative industries, or are they there primarily to attract the knowledge workers (Evans, 2009)?
The concept of ‘creative placemaking’ has in recent years come to focus in the US more precisely on a fourth theme, emphasising community and participation. This is the result of the separate and joint initiatives of the National Endowment for the Arts and ArtsPlace, which works with various agencies, foundations, city government bodies and non-profit organisations to use the arts actively to strengthen communities. It nonetheless remains linked to the broader foundations set out in the quotation from the White Paper. The vagueness of that formulation is now recognised by its authors (Nicodemus, 2013), and has led others to point out how difficult it is to evaluate its success (Moss, 2012). A problem with the creative places and creative placemaking discourse is the breadth of activities that it embraces, and the possible tensions between creative industries, cultural consumption, creative classes and communities. Although the discourse itself has not been adopted in the UK, many of its component features have been, leading to similar difficulties, as the Critical Reviews by Campbell and Oakley reveal.
The creative industries are firmly located within a discourse about place. A varied terminology of ‘creative clusters’, ‘quarters’, ‘districts’ and ‘hubs’ is employed in often overlapping ways. The networked economy is a helpful way of thinking about these creative industry districts as we will see in the chapter on Economy: impact, innovation and ecology. In these networks, that characterise much but by no means all of the creative industries, freelancers and micro-businesses interconnect for specialisation, production and projects in an environment where other arts spaces enlarge the locations for risk and experiment. These networked clusters and districts are rooted in the ways in which knowledge is formed and shared in the creative industries (Crossick, 2006), and have been characterised as having high levels of human input,
clusters of small companies operating on a project basis, dense transactional flows of information, goods and services, and complex divisions of labour tying people to places (Scott in O’Connor, 2004; also Fleming, 2004).
Comunian uses complexity theory similarly to underline the importance of the micro-interactions and networks between creative practitioners, the publicly-supported cultural sector and the cultural infrastructure of the city (Comunian, 2011). A study of electronic music production and cultures in London and Berlin has, however, argued that personal networks that are not dependent on a specific urban district are as important as clusters in the overall ecology (van Heur, 2010). Allington’s CVP Research Development Award on ‘Online networks and the production of value in electronic music’ nuances this further. Although it may not be important for the individual music maker to be in a specific location, they all orient towards London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area. He argues that digital media work not by eroding the importance of place, but by connecting people to places in which they do not live.
The term ‘industry’ in creative industries and cultural industries belies a reality where production is often squeezed out of such districts, over time, by consumption. A survey of designated ‘creative clusters’ finds them unlike conventionally defined business clusters, in that they include features such as conservation and heritage, regeneration initiatives, cultural tourism and visitor economies alongside creative businesses (Evans, 2009). In the creative quarters where studios, workshops, cafés, bars and live music provide a dynamic cultural and spatial ecology for small creative businesses
and non-profits alike, the ideal mix rarely survives for long. Successful creative quarters become places where the artists’ and designers’ studios and workshops, the launch pad for the new ecology in once run-down parts of the inner city, move out as rising property prices and rent levels make it impossible for them to stay.
In this analysis, the relationship between the arts and urban space comes to be about consumption rather than production, as part of a local or metropolitan visitor and experience economy. A distinction in theory and planning practice between production-led quarters and consumption- led quarters (McCarthy, 2005) is hard to maintain, and consumption and leisure come to prevail. Although creative and cultural quarters have been a feature of urban policy over the last couple of decades, research points to the often negative dimensions of their development: the marginalisation of production, social gentrification and increasing inequality within the urban space. Property prices and rent levels are the key driver. In the words of Kunzman, ‘Each story of regeneration begins with poetry and ends with real estate.’

Tzv. creative placemaking (kreativní utváření míst) je termín, který vznikl ve Spojených státech (Markusen a Gadwa, 2009), kde se tvrdilo, že rozvoj přítomnosti kultury a kreativní oblasti ve městě nebo čtvrti bude následovat růst ekonomiky, vitality a odolnosti komunity. Přestože nejkonkrétnější formulace a testování tohoto přístupu byly aplikovány v americkém kontextu, jeho myšlenky jsou zopakovány v diskurzech o kultuře ve městě a městské politice i jinde. Nejambicióznější zpracování této strategie je obsaženo v tzv. Bílé listině o creative placemaking sepsané pro uměleckou akademii Mayors’ Institute on City Design na základě podnětu vládní agentury National Endowment for the Arts. Vzhledem k tomu, kolik prvků je v ní obsaženo, má smysl ji ocitovat v plném rozsahu:
„V rámci konceptu creative placemaking partneři z veřejného, soukromého, neziskového a komunitního sektoru strategicky utvářejí fyzický a sociální charakter svého okolí, města či regionu pomocí umění a kulturních aktivit. A naopak, tato tvůrčí místa podporují podnikatele a kulturní průmysl, kteří produkují pracovní místa a příjem, jako svůj vedlejší produkt utvářejí nové produkty a služby a přitahují a udržují i nesouvisející obchodní aktivity a kvalifikované pracovníky. Společně mají výstupy strategie creative placemaking v podobě obyvatelnosti a ekonomického rozvoje potenciál radikálně proměnit budoucnost amerických měst (...). Namísto jediného uměleckého střediska či klastru velkých uměleckých a kulturních institucí koncept creative placemaking předjímá decentralizovanější soubor prostorů, které fungují jako tvůrčí tavicí kotle. V každém z nich se umění a kultura nacházejí v těsné blízkosti exportu soukromého sektoru, maloobchodních podniků a smíšených sociálních a tržních bytových domů, přičemž často obsazují budovy a parcely, které byly prázdné či nedostatečně využívané. (Markusen a Gadwa, 2010: s. 3).
Zde se tím pádem překrývá celá řada témat. Prvním z nich je to, že kreativní místa lákají turisty a návštěvníky do čtvrti proto, že jde z hlediska kultury o pulzující součást „zážitkové ekonomiky“. Ve svém prohlášení o zážitkové ekonomice Pine a Gilmoreová trvají na tom, že „zinscenování zkušeností je třeba vnímat jako specifickou formu ekonomického výstupu“ (Pine a Gilmore, 2011: s. ix). Druhým tématem je, že kreativní čtvrti či klastry, kde se spojují různá odvětví kreativního průmyslu, přinášejí prospěch tomuto průmyslu a zároveň tato tvůrčí místa posilují. Třetím je, že tvůrčí místa představují prostředí, kde lidé, jež Florida nazval „kreativní třídou“, chtějí žít, přičemž první dvě témata jsou součástí toho, co utváří místo, které je přitahuje. Floridova formulace vnímá jako ty, kdo podněcují ekonomický růst, kreativní lidi, spíše než korporace, což znamená, že města by se měla zaměřit na vybavenost a atmosféru, které tyto lidi přilákají (Florida, 2004; Florida a kol., 2015). Hlavní kritika spočívá v tom, že tímto jedním termínem hází do jednoho pytle zhruba třetinu pracovní síly od manažerů a právníků po umělce a techniky, od účetních a tanečníků po designéry a sociální pracovníky, což jsou povolání a profese, jejichž životní styl, mobilita, vkus a politické smýšlení jsou mnohem rozmanitější, než tato teorie připouští, přestože předkládá příčinné souvislosti, které však mohou ve skutečnosti existovat v jiných směrech. Hodnocení, které zohledňuje britská města, došlo k závěru, že ačkoli některé jednotlivé body byly platné, existovalo málo důkazů o existenci jediné kreativní třídy ve Velké Británii, stejně tak ohledně jejího potenciálního dopadu, jak uvádí Florida. „To, co je pravdivé, již známe. To, co je nové, pravděpodobně není pravdivé.“ (Nathan, 2005).
Kultura a kreativní průmysl tak často mají vizi nové ekonomiky, která kombinuje vědu, znalosti, kreativitu a kulturu, ovšem v takové směsici, že skutečná role umění a kultury zde není zřejmá. Jak se již tázal Evans: Je umění a kultura součástí ekonomiky, představuje nezbytný kontext pro kreativní průmysl, nebo je zde primárně proto, aby přilákalo znalostní pracovníky (Evans, 2009)?
Koncept creative placemaking se v posledních letech dostal ve Spojených státech do popředí konkrétně v souvislosti s dalším, čtvrtým tématem, které zdůrazňuje komunitu a participaci. Jde o výsledek oddělených a společných iniciativ vládní agentury National Endowment for the Arts a iniciativy ArtsPlace, která spolupracuje s několika agenturami, nadacemi, orgány městské samosprávy a neziskovými organizacemi, aby se umění aktivně využívalo k posílení komunit. I tak je ovšem tato iniciativa napojená na obecnější základy formulované v citaci z Bílé listiny. Neurčitost onoho výkladu nyní uznávají i jeho autoři (Nicodemus, 2013) a vedla ostatní k tomu, aby poukázali, jak je obtížné zhodnotit její úspěšnost (Moss, 2012). Potíž s kreativními místy a diskurzem kolem konceptu creative placemaking je rozsah aktivit, které sem spadají, a napětí, které se může vyskytnout mezi odvětvími kreativního průmyslu, kulturní konzumací a kreativními třídami a komunitami. Přestože diskurz jako takový ve Spojeném království nezapustil své kořeny, mnoho z jeho vlastností ano, což vedlo k obdobným potížím, jak poukazují kritická zhodnocení Campbella a Oakleyové.

Comunianová využívá teorii komplexnosti podobně, aby podtrhla význam mikrointerakcí a sítí mezi lidmi pracujícími v kreativním průmyslu, veřejně financovaným kulturním sektorem a kulturní infrastrukturou města (Comunian, 2011). Studie produkce elektronické hudby a kultury v Londýně a v Berlíně ovšem ukázala, že osobní sítě, které nezávisejí na konkrétním městském obvodu, jsou stejně důležité jako klastry v celkové ekologii (van Heur, 2010). Allingtonův grantový projekt v oblasti výzkumu a vývoje k PVHK zaměřený na Online sítě a produkce hodnoty u elektronické hudby toto rozvádí dále: přestože pro tvůrce hudby jako jednotlivce nemusí být podstatné se nacházet v konkrétní lokalitě, všichni beztak směřují do Londýna, New Yorku a oblasti Sanfranciského zálivu. Autor tvrdí, že digitální média fungují nikoli tak, že by snižovala význam daného místa, ale že propojují lidi s místy, na kterých nežijí.
Pojem průmysl u odvětví kreativního a kulturního průmyslu si protiřečí s realitou, kdy je produkce postupem času z takových obvodů mnohdy vystrnaděna konzumací. Podle výzkumu se takzvané kreativní klastry nepodobají tradičně definovaným klastrům v businessu, neboť nesou znaky, jako je památková péče a kulturní dědictví, iniciativy v oblasti regenerace a kulturní cestovní ruch a návštěvnická ekonomika spolu s kreativními podniky (Evans, 2009). V kreativních čtvrtích, kde ateliéry, workshopy, kavárny, bary a živá hudba utvářejí dynamickou kulturní a prostorovou ekologii pro malé tvůrčí podniky a stejně tak pro neziskové organizace, tento ideální mix vydrží dlouho jen výjimečně. Z úspěšných kreativních čtvrtí se stávají místa, ze kterých se ateliéry a workshopy umělců a designérů, odrazový můstek pro novou ekologii v kdysi zchátralých částech vnitřního města, vystěhovávají, protože kvůli rostoucím cenám nájmů a nemovitostí je pro ně nemožné zde zůstat.
V této analýze se vztah mezi uměním a městským prostorem týká spíše konzumace než produkce, jakožto součást místní či metropolitní návštěvnické a zážitkové ekonomiky. Rozlišení mezi teorií a plánovací praxí mezi čtvrtěmi, které závisejí na produkci, a těmi, které stojí na konzumaci (McCarthy, 2005), je těžké udržet, přičemž konzumace a volnočasové aktivity začínají převažovat. Přestože kreativní a kulturní čtvrti během posledních desetiletí definovaly městskou politiku, výzkum poukazuje na často negativní rozměr jejich rozvoje: marginalizace produkce, gentrifikace společnosti a narůstající nerovnosti uvnitř městského prostoru. Do chvíle, než se ve dvaasedmdesátém roce minulého století v Port Lligatu zhmotnil Lubo Kristek poprvé, a uvrhl mě v kóma nejistoty, onduloval jsem si knír pod nosem i vavříny na hlavě doufaje, že Le Grand Masturbateur hřmotného vetřelce zapudí. Jenže Kristek provedl okupaci mého ateliéru v pianissimu a doteď odtud nevytáhl paty, neboť já – Salvador Dalí – na něho myslet nepřestávám. Vím o něm svoje.
Nechtěl jsem ho tehdy pustit dovnitř, ani ze zřetele, ale on řekl prostě: Dej si pozor na den, kdy už po tobě nikdo nic chtít nebude…
Dlažební kostky křížové cesty byly vrženy.
Teprve když jsem 23. ledna 1989 zemřel, tekutá síla mé tiché řevnivosti začala sublimovat v mýtus. A protože žárlivost bývá teploměrnou střelkou úspěchu, vlastní skon jsem vyhlížel s reinkarnační nadějí, že spalující horečka vezme za své – a nastane Kristsmír. Nenastal.
Lubo Kristek děsí moje delirantní vidiny i po smrti!
Je pořád lepší. Enormemente!
Má pod čepicí i za lubem, takže mi leží v srdci i v žaludku. Nežárlí na něj pouze netalentovaní. Je imunní vůči všem formám stařecké kretenoitidy, poněvadž zrovna jemu léta ubývají. Bizarnost (dalíovsky narcistní metamorfická zvonkohra) mu zaručila, že jsem ho jako přírodní úkaz vzal na milost.
Světlo světa nespatřil tady u mne v Katalánsku, odkud surrealismus vzlétl ke hvězdám, ale kdesi v moravském močálu, kterému říkal – ač sám dovednostmi nemaloměrným – Maloměřice. Odjakživa to byl bůžkem nadskutečna protežovaný bastardo, co degustačně křižoval Cadaqués s ikonickým mercedesem. Asi jako já s rollsem a ikonickou Galou, co poznala nadání moje dřív než já Kristkovo.
Nemohu vystát nikoho, jehož schopnosti nezvládnu ignorovat. Operního pěvce či malíře, kteří jediným zívnutím nebo mávnutím štětcem plaší Smrtku.
Kristoferes k této čertovské rase vymítačů ďábla patří.
Geniální tvůrce devátých symfonií, které jsou stupněm šílenství skloňovatelné s mými.

Ponorným háčkem nástražného S loví fantasmata z jezera snů, v němž pytlačím i já. Odtud jsem roku 1929 vytáhl transcendentálním čeřenem vyvalenou lidskou bulvu. Orgasmická sebestřednost mnou cloumala jako potápěčem posnídavším pohár pingpongových míčků, když jsem při natáčení Andaluského psa rozřízl čepelí břitvy dívčí oko vejpůl. Zázračná filmová hříčka rozmetala mátožné přeludy pseudointelektuální pařížské avantgardy během čtvrt hodiny, dvě ženy v hledišti předčasně porodily, a já se usmíval.
O víc než půl století později mě ovšem smích přešel, poněvadž jsem málem umřel podruhé – upíří originalitou soumračného nápadu, jímž Lubo Kristek rozpůlil v klavírně pyramidálním Podhradí stovky zvědavých očí božsky proporčním zlatým řezem. Polonahý a zakrvácený vyhřezl z posvátné krávy jak fétus, jemuž duchovně zbídačená civilizace nedopřála zesnout...
Vykutálel se z šarlatového lůna s navlas vykutáleným šklebem čtrnáctiletého dítěte, které v hluboké noci na podzim 1957 ztropilo poplach kvůli oběšenci, jehož rozhoupalo ve větvích pouliční lípy. Než ohledavačům mrtvol došlo, že jde o iluzemi vycpanou figurínu, Kristek už byl dávno slavným. Memento ošklivosti jeho improvizací kvasí krásou, labyrinticky orchestrálním erotismem, ale rovněž úprdelnou koloraturou škvařících se exkrementorů.
Kolik faset má Kristkův happening?

Závist je strašná podoba zájmu a já Kristka odtud (z onoho světa – poznámka Galy) šmíruji v mučivých spirálách respektuálního sebezhroucení. Nenávidím ho na kolenou, poněvadž čarodějnou alchymii lazurních elixírů míchá se zručností vykradače Tizianovy dílny.
Kristčí atonální kosočtverečná polévka z kverulatorních humrů se vaří pod pokličkou, neboť před kalderickým performerem si nemůže být jisté žádné kumštýřsky mumlavé zaklínadlo. Jeho omamná iracionalita drtí vše, co on sám považuje za pouta omezující představivost. Budí respekt už jen tím, že existuje.
Kristkovy asambláže!
Svatozářná oltářní zjevení, která obnažuje jako falus exhibicionistův. Kdybych měl dnes jazyk, držím ho za zuby, abych nemusel uznat, že na nich – caramba! – něco je. Zároveň odmítám Kristka poučovat, protože ani on, ani já jsme se nikdy neřídili radami, jimiž jsme traumatizovali druhé.
S rozkoší medituji nad jeho totemickou Die Tragende, která přízračnou lebeční kostí trůní prostorem, a je mi jasnovidně zřejmé, že lidé si už Kristka – absolutamente – nikdy nespletou.

Envy is a terrible form of interest and I keep watching Kristek from there (from the next world – Gala’s note) in agonizing spirals of respectual self-collapse. I hate him on my knees because he blends the sorcerous alchemy of glazing elixirs with the dexterity of Tizian’s workroom looter.
Kristek’s atonal rhombus soup made of grumbling lobsters is boiling under a lid because no artistically mumbling incantation can feel certain before this caldera performer. His intoxicating irrationality crushes everything that he deems to be the bonds limiting imagination himself. He arouses respect only by his existence.

The aureole altar apparitions he bares like a phallus of an exhibitionist. If I had my tongue now, I would hold it, to not to have to recognize that – ¡caramba! – there is something in them. At the same time, I refuse to lecture Kristek because neither him nor me have ever followed the advice we traumatized the others with.
With delight, I meditate over his totemic Die Tragende, which dominates the space with its phantasmal cranial bone and I am clairvoyantly sure that people will never confuse Kristek – absolutamente – with anyone else.

all day I’ve been thinkin about what job I’d do if I left the art world. Like, I loved learning Spanish and Japanese so much, n I could have gone into translation / interpretation / teaching. what stability that might have brought me! Could hav made my life in a different country, could have had a pension. Not that those fields are without their own issues but, jesus christ, instead I’m knee-deep in a mudslide of art bullshit and trying to walk uphill through it all. At the top of the mountain are all the middle class white people holding onto their director and executive position jobs so tightly their knuckles are as white as their faces n PUBES tbh. The art that surrounds them up there is uncreative, repetitive, and often harmful. most of the art is, really, all the way down the pay scale - with the impactful / emotional / aesthetic experience of art made by some marginalised people few and far between, kept rare. Below the directors, middle ground gallery curators seem largely boring, and below them the artist-led activity is precarious, white, and mediocre. I’m 24 and i am over it. I thought it would be so much better than this. n now I’m sitting down to write that wow I don’t want to inherit this bullshit, and also wtf does it say about the people in (all positions of) power that they’re okay working like this, that this is the state they support?
The arts are able to Be Political(!) in a way other industries aren’t, and they’re not making the most of that philosophical freedom. Instead, they are mirroring and reproducing the same systemic racism and ableism and all the isms that constitute the working and social worlds. In this way, they are tbh no different to the Tate; they’re all just high on performing their own pseudo-radicalism (like ~DIY culture as a whole is a substitute for a personality, opinions or a system of Belief) (Like ~DIY culture in fact constitutes a whole-ass culture, rather than j a mode of working/operating...) n when that’s broken down n put under ANY ounce of inspection, it’s obvious every single art scene has the same dickhead problems. Yep, underrepresented artists remain pushed out of mainstream platforms, can’t exhibit anywhere, don’t feel comfortable in cliquey studio groups made up of cis white bolshy graduates, so they can’t develop their practice and aren’t able to build up a CV to get funding n start something up of their own where they might be on a level playing field for once. loooong sentence. Critics are like 95% white cis men who wont and cant do justice in their understanding and writing of art made by those marginalised groups - there just needs to be more specific diversity in who is writing about exhibitions so that artists are allowed 2 receive critique n education. Artist-led galleries stay trying to become white cube institutions and are shit at making any effort towards engagement so audiences remain the same thirty people coming down to instagram a flower in a shoe at an angle in front of a pink neon light. Everyone else is scared to join in, uninterested bc obviously, and wont walk through the doors because of the weird space the white cube demands of its visitors’ behaviour and academic prowess. The stuff IN galleries is RARELY of any value; exhibitions go in one ear n out the other, forgettable zzzzzzz. Unpaid labour is the norm, no one knows how much people who DO get paid are earning, and when you make the switch from voluntary work to making a bit of money the agony it takes to ask if there is a budget is too much. Galleries of artist-led operational scale move from building to building once their presence has gentrified the area enough for the developers’ satisfaction, and that might STOP if anyone ever owned their building but they dont. the arts aren’t business-minded enough or realistic imo, leaving themselves open to the whims of the market instead of fighting to become self-sustainable - n tbh I think it’s because adding any venture besides an exhibition programme into a space breaks the seal of the white cube’s aesthetic sanctity and people are scared of that (kill the white cube tho!!! survive!!!). There’s also nowhere to complain about how these systems operate because no scene ever invites criticism, only arts journalism. ; the same people keep their seats at the top, play musical chairs, fail upwards - and no space opens up for anybody else and nothing changes.

celej den jsem přemejšlela o tom, co bych dělala za práci, kdybych nechala umění. Jako že hrozně mě bavilo učit se španělsky a japonsky, mohla jsem začít překládat/tlumočit/jít učit. z toho bych určitě měla stálej příjem! Mohla jsem začít novej život v jiný zemi, mohla jsem mít důchod. Ne že by tyhle obory neměly svoje problémy, ale do prdele, dyť jsem až po kolena zabořená v bahně umělejckejch sraček a snažim se z nich vyhrabat nahoru. a úplně nahoře je celá ta střední třída bílejch, který se držej svýho ředitele a svejch vedoucích pozic tak úporně, že jim klouby zbělaly jako jejich ksichty a jejich prdele, jestli mám bejt upřímná. Umění, kterym jsou obklopený, je netvůrčí, opakuje se a dost často je škodlivý. většinu umění s jeho rádoby významným/emočním/estetickým dopadem dělá několik málo lidí odsunutejch na okraj na samym chvostu platový tabulky, fakt to tak je. Pod ředitelema je většinou naprosto nudná střední vrstva galerijních kurátorů a umělecká činnost pocházející od těch ještě pod nima je nejistá, věnujou se jí běloši a je průměrná. Je mi 24 a už si nedělám žádný iluze. Myslela jsem, že to bude mnohem lepší. teď tady sedim a píšu, že v těchhle sračkách fakt nechci pokračovat, a taky co to sakra vypovídá o těch lidech na (všech) vlivnejch pozicích, kterejm takhle pracovat připadá v pořádku, který tenhle stav podporujou?
Umění může bejt politický (!) způsobem, jakym jiný obory bejt nemůžou, a oni tý myšlenkový svobody vůbec nevyužívaj. Místo toho jenom odrážej a reprodukujou ten samej systematickej rasismus a ableismus a všechny další -ismy, který utvářej svět pracujících a společnost. v tomhle směru se upřímně nijak nelišej od Tate Gallery – jenom se dál opájej hranim toho svýho pseudoradikalismu (stejně jako DIY kultura je jako celek náhražkou osobnosti, názorů nebo systému hodnot) (stejně jako DIY kultura ve skutečnosti představuje celou zasranou kulturu, spíš než pouhej způsob práce/fungování…), a když se to rozebere nebo začne ASPOŇ TROCHU zkoumat, je jasný, že úplně každá umělecká scéna má ty samý debilní problémy. Jo, nedostatečně zastoupený umělci jsou z veřejnýho prostoru pořád odsouvaný pryč, nemůžou nikde vystavovat, necejtěj se dobře ve skupinách v elitářskejch ateliérech stvořenejch pro umíněný cisgenderový bílý absolventy, tím pádem se nemůžou rozvíjet a vybudovat si portfolio, aby získali prostředky a mohli začít něco vlastního, kde by aspoň jednou měli rovný podmínky. jo, je to na dlouho. Kritici jsou tak z 95 % bílý cisgenderový chlapi, který se nebudou a nemůžou chovat spravedlivě ve svym chápání a psaní o umění, který dělaj tyhle marginalizovaný skupiny – prostě musí bejt větší rozmanitost v lidech, který píšou o výstavách, aby umělci měli možnost se dostat k hodnocení svojí práce a ke vzdělání. Galerie, který vedou umělci, dál usilujou o to stát se institucema jako je White Cube a nesnažej se ani hovno, aby byly i pro ostatní, tim pádem jejich publikum je pořád jedněch a těch samejch třicet lidí, který dávaj na instagram kytičky v šikmo postavený botě pod křiklavym narůžovělym světlem. Kdokoliv další se bojí zapojit a nemá zájem, proč, to je snad jasný, a práh galerie v životě nepřekročí kvůli tomu pitomýmu prostoru a požadavkům, který White Cube klade na chování a akademickou způsobilost svejch návštěvníků. Věci UVNITŘ galerií nemaj skoro NIKDY žádnou hodnotu. Výstavy jdou jednim uchem tam a druhym ven, vaaaaaa. Neplacená práce je normou, nikdo neví, kolik vydělávaj lidi, který opravdu DOSTÁVAJ zaplaceno, a když už konečně přestanete dělat dobrovolnickou práci a začnete si trochu vydělávat, ty muka, který prožíváte, když se musíte zeptat, jestli na to maj rozpočet, jsou strašný. Reclus et Kupka : la géographie et l’histoire
L’Homme et la terre représentait, pour Élisée Reclus (1830-1905, fig. 1), l’achèvement d’une trilogie entreprise avec La Terre. Description des phénomènes de la vie du globe (Hachette, 1968) et poursuivie avec la Nouvelle Géographie universelle (Hachette, 1876-1894), 19 volumes). Ce triptyque traduit l’évolution de sa pensée, d’une géographie descriptive, physique et scientifique à une vision historique, politique et sociale du rapport des civilisations à l’espace. Libéré de toute contrainte idéologique par la rupture de son contrat avec Hachette, éditeur dont il redoutait la censure, Reclus a écrit en parfaite liberté d’esprit. A l’écart du modèle de géographie universelle posé par Malte-Brun (1775-1826) et poursuivi ensuite par Paul Vidal de la Blache (1845-1918), il a ouvert la voie à une autre conception de la discipline, aujourd’hui considérée par Yves Lacoste comme l’origine de la géopolitique et diversement rattachée à l’émergence de l’écologie.
La contribution de Kupka, quoique non prévue à l’origine, renforce la singularité de l’entreprise dans le panorama des géographies modernes en mettant en évidence la vision historique et politique du texte, éclairée par la page de garde où les allégories emblématiques de l’histoire et de la géographie encadrent symétriquement la vision de l’homme sur l’univers (fig. 2a). A la différence des géographies traditionnelles, où le globe est figuré comme un objet dans son cadre noir ou sur son fond étoilé, Kupka a représenté, pour Reclus, la vision subjective et métaphysique de l’homme qui contemple.
Au cours de la seconde moitié du 19e siècle les géographies étaient illustrées, en plus des cartes et des graphiques, dans la logique de leur exercice scientifique, par des photographies, des dessins explicitement légendés « d’après nature », « sur le motif », ou « d’après une photographies ». Il en est ainsi pour l’atlas de référence sous la 3e République, celui d’Eysseric – le géographe ayant dans ce cas exécuté lui-même la plupart des croquis – ou pour les précédentes publications de Reclus, si l’on excepte Histoire d’un Ruisseau (1968) et Histoire d’une montagne (1880), publiés dans la collection Hetzel et présentés comme des ouvrages littéraires, avec des dessins de L. Benett dans le style du paysage pittoresque romantique. Les dessins de Kupka, cohabitant avec l’iconographie classique, font ainsi de L’Homme et la Terre un ouvrage atypique.
La commande pour cette publication est la première grande entreprise de Kupka dans le domaine du livre illustrée. Poursuivi sur quatre années (1905-1908), parallèlement à d’autres projets, cet ensemble homogène semble avoir, au premier abord, une logique autonome et comme distraite de l’évolution de l’artiste durant cette période – les premiers dessins sont contemporains des cycles pour L’Assiette au beurre (1904), les derniers précèdent à peine les études abstraites d’après La Petite Fille au ballon (New York, Museum of Modern Art). L’académisme très démonstratif de la série dérange une lecture que l’on voudrait linéaire vers l’abandon de l’art figuratif. L’évolution de Kupka ne suit pas celle des jeunes artistes de Montmartre telle que l’analyse rétrospectivement Jacques Villon (voisin et ami de Kupka rue Caulaincourt puis à Puteaux) pour qui la pratique du dessin de presse a été une étape essentielle, irréversible, dans le processus de libération des codes académiques.

Reclus a Kupka: Zeměpis a historie
Pro Éliséeho Recluse (1830–1905, obr. 1) dílo Člověk a země představovalo završení trilogie započaté svazkem La Terre. Description des phénomènes de la vie du globe (Země. Popis jevů života na zemi. Hachette, 1868), po němž následovala Nouvelle géographie universelle (Nový všeobecný zeměpis. Hachette, 1876–1894, 19 svazků). Tento triptych zaznamenává vývoj jeho uvažování od deskriptivní, fyzické a vědecké geografie směrem k historické, politické a sociální vizi vztahu civilizací k jimi obývaným prostorem. Vzhledem k tomu, že Reclus byl osvobozen od jakéhokoli ideologického nátlaku po zrušení smlouvy s nakladatelstvím Hachette , u nějž se obával z cenzury, mohl psát zcela svobodomyslně. Tím, že se odchýlil od modelu všeobecného zeměpisu Malte–Bruna (1775–1826) a následně na něj navázal Vidal de la Blanche (1845–1918), otevřel cestu zcela novému pojetí disciplíny, která je dnes Yvesem Lacostem považována za základ geopolitiky a zároveň je různě spjata se vznikem ekologie.
Kupkovo přispění, jakkoli se s ním zprvu nepočítalo, podtrhuje jedinečnost tohoto počinu v rámci moderní geografie tím, že jasně poukazuje na historickou a politickou vizi textu osvětlenou na předsádce, kde symbolické historické a zeměpisné alegorie symetricky rámují pohled člověka na vesmír (obr. 2a). Na rozdíl od tradičních zeměpisných zobrazení, kdy je země zachycena jako předmět v černém rámu nebo na pozadí posetém hvězdami, Kupka pro Recluse znázornil subjektivní a metafyzický pohled člověka, který pozoruje.
Během druhé poloviny 19. století byly zeměpisné publikace kromě map a grafů kvůli své vědecké funkci doplňovány také fotografiemi a ilustracemi s explicitními popisky jako „podle přírody“, „v plenéru“ či „dle fotografie“. To je i případ oficiálního atlasu z období třetí francouzské republiky od Eysserica , v němž je autorem většiny nákresů sám zeměpisec, nebo dřívějších Reclusových publikací s výjimkou děl Histoire d’un ruisseau (Dějiny potoka, 1868) a Histoire d’une montagne (Dějiny hory, 1880), vydaných nakladatelstvím Hetzel a představených jako literární díla včetně ilustrací od L. Benetta ve stylu malebných romantických krajin. Díky Kupkovým ilustracím, které existovaly paralelně s klasickou ikonografií, je Člověk a země zcela atypické dílo.
Zakázka k této knize byla prvním významným Kupkovým počinem v oblasti ilustrovaných publikací. Celý jednotný soubor ilustrací, na kterém Kupka pracoval po dobu čtyř let (1905–1909) současně s jinými projekty, jako by měl od samého počátku svou vlastní logiku jakoby odtrženou od umělcova vývoje v tomto období – první kresby vznikaly současně s cykly pro časopis L’Assiette au beurre (1904), zatímco poslední vznikly teprve těsně před abstraktními studiemi podle Děvčátka s míčem (New York, Museum of Modern Art). Velmi přesvědčivý akademismus celé série narušuje lineární představu o směřování Kupkovy tvorby až po opuštění figurativního umění. Kupkův vývoj nenásleduje ostatní mladé výtvarníky z Montmartru, jak ve svých úvahách zpětně zjišťuje Jacques Villon (Kupkův přítel a soused nejprve z ulice Caulaincourt, poté v Puteaux), pro kterého byla časopisecká kresba naprosto zásadním a nevyhnutelným stádiem v procesu osvobození se od akademických pravidel.

Text d'origen - Anglès Los temas clásicos le interesaron a Picasso desde muy pronto. La experiencia decisiva fue el viaje que hizo 1917 a Italia, con motivo del estreno del ballet Parade, cuyo telón diseñó. Que un artista del siglo XX que había sido una de las figuras centrales del periodo de las vanguardias históricas se interesara por el arte italiano y por el clasicismo es algo insólito. El viaje a Italia había dejado ya de ser una experiencia formativa para los artistas del norte y para los modernos. La gran época del Grand Tour había pasado. Los futuristas italianos repudiaron el pasado artístico de su país y los surrealistas, con los que Picasso estuvo relacionado en el periodo de entreguerras, mostraron más interés por la estética romántica, cuyo foco estaba en Alemania, que por la tradición clásica de Grecia y Roma. Sin embargo, es sabido que Picasso tenía por costumbre desafiar los lugares comunes y romper las expectativas que el público y la critica depositaba en él. Por ello no le importó ir contracorriente. Compartía con Freud, que también hizo un viaje iniciático a Roma, la creencia de que los mitos clásicos eran una fuente inagotable de inspiración para el hombre moderno. Pero Picasso, para sorpresa de aquellos que seguían viéndolo como un vanguardista avant la lettre, no era un enemigo del arte del pasado, ni de los monumentos y las obras maestras que se conservan en los museos; prueba de ello es el programa iconográfico de la Suite Vollard. donde Picasso demostró un notable dominio de las fuentes literarias y mitográficas; mientras que desde un punto de vista formal, hizo gala de su conocimiento de las reglas de la armonía y de la composición, así como de la técnica del dibujo a línea. Por otra parte, en la Suite Vollard Picasso hizo una demostración del dominio de las de los procedimientos y los recursos expresivos de la técnica del grabado.
En la Suite Vollard se advierte un contraste significativo entre las figuras esquemáticas, que aparecen acabadas y perfectas, y aquellas otras más que están abocetadas de un modo naturalista y ejecutadas con un sombreado intenso. En las primeras no hay sombras, son casi todas las imágenes del taller del escultor; en las segundas se advierte un intento de conseguir efectos de claroscuro y de contrastes lumínicos. ¿Por qué Picasso quiso confrontar ambos sistemas de representación, el de los vasos griegos y el del arte del Renacimiento? El hecho de que el primero aparezca acabado y cerrado no es casual. Sólo podemos apreciar su carácter genuino comparándolo con las formas abiertas y problemáticas, donde se resalta el claroscuro, que pertenecen a la pintura del Renacimiento y el Barroco. Diríase que Picasso quiso confrontar versiones del clasicismo: la helénica, que es la originaria, y la que se desarrolla a partir del Renacimiento italiano. Lo dicho revuela que no tenia una visión univoca del clasicismo.

The decisive experience for that was a journey to Italy he made in 1917 to see the premiere of the ballet Parade for which he designed the backdrop. For the 20th century artist who was one of the central figures of the era of historical avant-gardes, being interested in Italian art and classicism was something really unusual. Travelling to Italy had ceased to be a formative experience for the artists coming from the north and for contemporary ones. The great era of the Grand Tour was already past. Italian futurists condemned the artistic past of their country, and the surrealists with whom Picasso was related during the interwar period, showed more interest for romantic aesthetics with its focus based in Germany than for the classical tradition of Greece and Rome. Nonetheless, we know that Picasso used to challenge ordinary topics and shatter the expectations the public and the critics pinned on him. For this reason, it did not really matter to him to go against the current. Together with Freud who also made a journey of initiation to Rome, he was of the belief that classical myths were an inexhaustible source of inspiration for modern man. Yet Picasso, to the surprise of those who continued perceiving him as an avant-garde artist avant la lettre, was not opposed either to the art of the past, or to the monuments and the masterpieces that are kept in museums, which is evidenced by the iconographic programme of the Vollard Suite where Picasso showed an impressive knowledge of literary and mythographic sources, whereas from a formal point of view, he displayed his knowledge of the rules of harmony and composition as well as the technique of linear drawing. Moreover, in the Vollard Suite, Picasso demonstrated his knowledge of the processes and expressive resources of the technique of etching.
In the Vollard Suite, a remarkable contrast between the schematic figures that seem perfect and accomplished, and those other ones that are sketched in a naturalist way and effected with intense shading can be noticed. On the first ones, there are no shades (those include almost all the images from the Sculptor’s Studio), while on the second ones, we might notice an attempt to achieve effects of chiaroscuro and light contrasts. Why did Picasso want to confront both systems of representation, the one on the Greek vases and that of Christian art in the Renaissance? The fact that the first one seems closed and finished is not accidental. We can only appreciate its genuine nature comparing it to the open and problematic forms where the chiaroscuro stands out, pertaining to the Christian art of the Renaissance and the Baroque. It could be said that Picasso wanted to confront the versions of classicism: the Hellenic as the initial, and which evolves from Italian Renaissance. A través del tiempo el ser humano ha tenido una relación conflictiva con su entorno. Cultura nace de Natura, pero no por equilibrio, sino por oposición. Esto es tanto más cierto en un mundo cada vez más globalizado donde resulta evidente que decisiones individuales ya no pueden ser tomadas a la ligera, si es que alguna vez pudieron serlo. Cada desperdicio que generamos, cada árbol que talamos, el CO2 que emitimos aún con nuestra respiración, la educación que impartimos, cada cosa que decimos y cómo nos comunicamos, tienen un impacto inevitable en este ambiente.
Quedan aún pequeños oasis ajenos a la civilización, pero para todos nosotros, urbanitas, que por voluntad, necesidad, o procedencia vivimos en la metrópolis, que anteponemos el desarrollo y la comodidad de la colectividad humana al desarrollo equilibrado del mundo, resulta cada vez más extraño nuestro vínculo originario con el entorno natural., Vivimos un mundo raro, ajeno, incierto, que afecta nuestra sensibilidad y determina nuestra conciencia de la responsabilidad que tenemos sobre la conservación del mundo y las acciones que deberíamos de tomar para mejorar nuestras vidas.

Bestias Contemporáneas - un nuevo orden natural es un catálogo de obras que bien podría ser agregado al guion de un museo de historia natural, una aportación actualizada al inventario de especies imposibles que habitan nuestro planeta.
Este minucioso registro analiza los patrones de distribución en el espacio y en el tiempo de la “fauna urbana”, sus mutaciones, comportamientos e impactos en el hábitat.
Como un nuevo expedicionario, emula los pasos de un explorador en la selva y, con un tratamiento que podría no distinguirse del quehacer de un científico, se da a la tarea de documentar la cotidianidad que nos rodea, la cual, a fuerza de nuestro poderío y debilidad como especie, hemos convertido en nuestro mundo natural: la publicidad, la migración, la ambición, la tiranía, la violencia, situaciones que se vuelven casi imperceptibles en las ciudades, que borran y confunden los límites entre lo animal y lo humano.
Como especie depredadora por excelencia, asumimos la forma de sedientas manadas de turistas en busca de nuevas tierras donde desahogar nuestras ansias desenfrenadas del mismo modo que las pandillas que asolan las calles de las urbes en un tumulto nocturno. Cual trofeos de caza, los seres humanos son convertidos en cabezas tzantza y tapetes exóticos que podrían engalanar alguna lujosa residencia; símbolos de victoria, orgullosos y macabros recordatorios de los enemigos caídos en batalla.
De manera similar y opuesta, las grandes migraciones humanas desfilan ante nuestros ojos, movidas por la desesperación creada por la ambición y el hambre de poder de unos pocos o a causa de los grandes desastres naturales producto del consumo desmedido e insaciable de las castas y sociedades privilegiadas.
Los espectadores de esta “muestra de historia natural” no tendrán a su disposición las escenas paradisíacas de lugares lejanos para tomarse una foto de recuerdo; los restos fósiles han sido desplazados por dinosaurios políticos cuyas estructuras arcaicas y profundas siguen dirigiendo nuestras vidas, seres reales que superan con creces a cualquier tirano jurásico imaginario que pudiera deambular en nuestras pesadillas. En su lugar, si acaso se nos permite disfrutar de algún registro animal o vegetal, será sólo para descubrir que aquellos especímenes admirables que conocíamos han tenido que evolucionar ante nuevas condiciones, que se han convertido en monstruos que más que nuestra admiración, concitan nuestro temor.
Bestias Contemporáneas - un nuevo orden natural trata de generar una serie de preguntas que acaso pudieran intentar dar respuesta a cuestiones como qué significa vivir en donde estamos y qué maneras tendríamos que adoptar para aspirar a un futuro posible en este mundo contradictorio en el que habitamos en medio del peligro y la auto complacencia.

Au fil du temps, l’être humain a eu une relation conflictuelle avec son entourage. La culture naît à partir de la nature, pas par équilibre, mais par opposition. Cela est d’autant plus vrai dans un monde toujours plus globalisé où il est bien évident que les décisions individuelles ne peuvent pas être prises à légère ; s’elles ont jamais pu l’être. Chaque gaspillage que l’on produit, chaque arbre que l’on abat, le CO2 que l’on émet même si c’est par notre respiration, la formation que l’on fournit, tout ce que l’on dit et comment se communique-t-on a un impact inévitable sur cet environnement.
Il reste encore de petites oasis étrangères à la civilisation, cependant pour tous ceux d’entre nous qui, que ce soit par volonté, par nécessité ou par notre origine vivons dans la métropole, qui accordons la préférence au développement et au confort de la communauté humaine sur un développement équilibré du monde, notre lien original avec notre milieu naturel semble chaque fois plus étrange. L’œuvre de Renato Garza Cervera s’est évoluée, entre autres, autour de ces préoccupations-ci. Ce registre détaillé présente une analyse des modèles de distribution dans le temps et dans l’espace de la « faune urbaine », y compris ses mutations, comportements et ses impacts sur l’habitat.

Les spectateurs de cette « démonstration de l’histoire naturelle » ne disposeront pas de scènes paradisiaques des endroits lointains pour pouvoir prendre une photo souvenir ; les restes fossiles ont été déplacés par les dinosaures politiques avec leur structures archaïques et profondes qui continuent à dominer nos vies, les êtres réels qui dépassent largement tout tyran jurassique imaginaire qui puisse déambuler dans nos cauchemars. Dans le cas où il nous serait permis de jouir d’un registre animal ou végétal, ce sera uniquement pour nous rendre compte que ces espèces admirables que nous connaissions ont dû s’évoluer afin de faire face à de nouvelles conditions, et qu’elles se sont transformées dans des monstres qui, plus que de l’admiration, suscitent notre peur.

Début septembre 1912, dans un article annonçant le Salon d’Automne à venir, le chroniqueur artistique André Warnod, toujours bien informé, indique : « La partie réservée aux arts décoratifs sera, comme tous les ans, très importante. La grande innovation de cette année sera de donner à l’architecture un intérêt qu’elle n’a généralement pas dans cette salle d’exposition. C’est ainsi qu’on verra une façade de Duchamp-Villon, extrêmement curieuse […]. Il y aura naturellement aussi des ensembles mobiliers des exposants industriels Groult, Mare, Sue, Dufrêne, Jalot, Follot, etc. »
Contexte
Dès ses débuts, en 1903, le Salon d’Automne de Paris, à l’instar du Salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts et du Salon des artistes français, avait réservé une place aux architectes et aux décorateurs, aux côtés des peintres, des graveurs et des sculpteurs . En 1912, pour célébrer la dixième édition de cette manifestation, ses organisateurs projettent de renforcer la présentation des sections consacrées à l’architecture et aux arts décoratifs, régulièrement négligées jusqu’alors en comparaison de l’attention recueillie par les autres, parfois au prix de scandales restés dans l’Histoire de l’art comme celui de la « cage aux fauves » lors de l’édition de 1905. Il est donc décidé de mettre en avant une trentaine de projets d’arts décoratifs, notamment deux qui doivent permettre d’apprécier grandeur nature les propositions de deux architectes-décorateurs français de générations différentes : un hall de Charles Plumet, vice-président du Salon d’Automne et architecte bien établi qui, s’étant fait le promoteur d’un style raffiné allant vers une simplification relative après les effusions de l’Art Nouveau, a succédé dans la faveur de l’époque à Hector Guimard , et l’évocation d’un hôtel particulier dans un projet conçu par André Mare, jeune artiste décorateur prometteur mais déjà expérimenté, avec une façade du sculpteur Raymond Duchamp-Villon en guise d’exergue remarquable.
L’importance délibérée des deux projets-phares chargés d’illustrer le renouveau et la consistance des arts décoratifs en France témoigne d’un regain d’intérêt mais aussi d’un besoin d’y voir clair en ce domaine et de s’orienter vers autre chose, phénomènes que seul explique un contexte bien particulier.
Pour le comprendre, il faut remonter deux ans plus tôt, lorsque les artistes décorateurs allemands avaient répondu favorablement à l’invitation d’exposer au Salon d’Automne de 1910 leurs dernières créations. Véritable démonstration de force, la présentation des « Munichois », ou des « Bavarois » comme on les nomma également alors, avait marqué les esprits, suscité des débats sur la valeur de leurs propositions et poussé les créateurs français à s’interroger sur une éventuelle perte d’influence, tout cela sur fond plus général d’émulation à l’échelle européenne (avec notamment l’essor de la Wiener Werkstätte en Autriche ou du Werkbund en Allemagne) . L’année suivante, on pouvait lire dans la presse : « l’exposition si importante et si intéressante, quoique si peu de notre goût, des artistes décorateurs munichois fut le clou [du dernier] salon ». Il ne s’agissait d’ailleurs pas que d’une affaire de goût à en croire différents articles où il est rappelé que la section consacrée aux arts décoratifs du Salon d’Automne de 1912 doit être une réponse au coup de semonce des « Munichois » ou « Bavarois » qui avaient exposé « à l'avant-dernier Salon d'automne nombre de choses d'un goût contestable, certes, mais qui montraient que [les Français avaient été] devancés de beaucoup au point de vue commercial, sinon au point de vue artistique ». Alertés d’un profond changement, conscients qu’une époque touche à sa fin, les Français doivent absolument rétablir, en ce domaine, une suprématie longtemps passée pour incontestable. Une importante décision est prise dans ce sens au début de l’année 1912, celle d’organiser à Paris en 1915 une grande exposition consacrée aux arts décoratifs : en raison de la guerre de 1914-1918, ce projet ne verra le jour qu’en 1925 ; ce sera la célèbre « Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes ».
Différents événements sont d’ailleurs clairement perçus comme des signes de ce changement d’époque, à commencer par la vente Jacques Doucet début juin 1912, le célèbre couturier ayant décidé de se séparer de sa fabuleuse collection d’art du XVIIIe siècle, si longtemps à la mode en raison de ses résonnances avec l’Art Nouveau, pour se tourner vers la création contemporaine. Concomitante de cette vente très médiatisée et couronnée d’un tel succès qu’elle sera longtemps considérée comme la « vente du siècle », l’organisation exceptionnelle d’« expositions d’art décoratif contemporain » à Paris est également l’occasion de prendre conscience de l’évolution en cours du goût . Un article malheureusement non signé est tout à fait instructif à cet égard : déplorant la disparition des amateurs, « remplacés par les collectionneurs, qui amassent et ne commandent pas, conservent, à vrai dire, la beauté morte, mais ne contribuent pas à créer de la beauté neuve et vivante », déplorant aussi la disparition d’une manière bien particulière d’associer intimement peinture, sculpture et arts décoratifs, caractéristique selon lui de l’art français, son auteur félicite la comtesse Greffulhe d’avoir accordé son patronage à ces « expositions d’art décoratif contemporain » qui, dans trois hôtels particuliers prêtés par des « spécialistes de l'art ancien », vont permettre au public de découvrir les dernières nouveautés en ce domaine. Proposant de « faire cesser la sotte distinction entre les artistes et les artisans », il prophétise qu’en continuant ainsi à soutenir les artistes décorateurs la France « ne tardera pas à créer un art moderne véritable non plus théorique et factice comme celui que nous avons vu naître et expirer dans l'espace de dix ans, mais pratique et souriant, modelé sur les besoins du temps et digne en même temps des vieilles et charmantes traditions » . Évoquant, peu après leur fin, les expositions patronnées par la comtesse Greffulhe parmi un certain nombre de « récapitulations » caractéristiques selon lui de l’époque, le critique Arsène Alexandre suggèrera de son côté que la naissance d’un nouveau style n’est peut-être pas loin, en s’interrogeant de la sorte : « Est-ce qu’il y aurait réellement en ce moment-ci quelque chose qui finit et quelque chose qui recommence ? »

Context
Since its beginnings in 1903, the Automn Salon in Paris, like the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts and the Salon of French artists, had reserved a place for architects and decorators, together with painters, engravers and sculptors . In 1912, to celebrate the 10th year of this manifestation, its organisers contemplate reinforcing the presentation of the sections dedicated to architecture and decorative arts that used to be neglected until then compared to the attention received by others, sometimes at the cost of scandals that become part of the history of art like the one of a “wild-beast cage” during the year of 1905. It is thus decided to showcase about thirty projects of decorative arts, mainly two of them that will allow to fully appreciate the proposals of two French architects-decorators from different generations: the room of Charles Plumet, the vice-president of the Autumn Salon and a well-established architect who, after becoming the promoter of a refined style heading towards a relative simplification after the effusions of Art Nouveau, followed Hector Guimard in favour of the era, and the evocation of a private mansion within a project conceived by André Mare, a young and promising but already experienced decorative artist, including a facade by the sculptor Raymond Duchamp-Villon as a highlight.
The intentional significance of the two leading projects meant to illustrate the resurgence and the consistency of decorative arts in France demonstrate a renewed interest but also a need to see clearly in the field and to move towards another thing - phenomena that can only be explained by a very specific context.
To understand that, we need to go two years back when German decorative artists had responded favourably to the invitation to exhibit their last creations at the Autumn Salon of 1910. The presentation of “the Munich” or “the Bavarian” as they were equally called by that time, as a true demonstration of force, had left its mark and sparked off discussions on the value of their proposals, pushing the French artists to wonder about their possible loss of influence, all that on a more general background of competition on a European scale (especially with the rise of the Wiener Werkstätte in Austria or the Deutscher Werkbund in Germany) . The following year, one could read in the press: “An exhibition which is so interesting and significant, that although it not really to our taste, the Munich decorative artists were the highlight of the [last] salon ”. After all, it was just a question of taste according to different articles reminding us that the section dedicated to decorative arts at the Autumn Salon of 1912 had to be a response to the warning of “the Munich” or “the Bavarian” who “exhibited a number of items at the last Autumn Salon that were certainly of a questionable taste but that showed that [the French were] staying ahead a lot not from the commercial, but from the artistic point of view ”. Alerted to the deep change and conscious about that an era was coming to its end, the French had to completely reestablish their supremacy in this field, that had been long considered as unquestionable. In this sense, an important decision was taken at the beginning of 1912 to organize a great exhibition in Paris in 1915 dedicated to decorative arts. Due to the war of 1914-1918, this project would only see the light of day in 1925 becoming the famous International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts.
Besides that, various events are clearly seen as signs of this change of the era, starting with the sale of Jacques Doucet at the beginning of June 1912 with the famous dressmaker who decided to get rid of his spectacular collection of art from the 18th century that had been popular for so long due to its resonance with Art Nouveau, and to move to contemporary creation. Simultaneously with this very publicised sale that was so successful that it would be long considered as “the sale of the century”, this exceptional organization of “exhibitions of contemporary decorative art” in Paris was also the opportunity to become aware of the ongoing development of taste . There is an article, unfortunately not signed, which is very enlightening in this respect: lamenting the disappearance of connoisseurs, “replaced by collectors who pile up but do not order, and to tell the truth, who preserve but do not contribute to create a new and living beauty”, and lamenting also the disappearance of a very specific manner of bringing together closely painting, sculpture and decorative arts, which are typical of French art according to the article. Its author congratulates the countess Greffulhe for granting her patronage to these “exhibitions of contemporary decorative art” which will, in three private mansions lent by “experts on ancient art”, allow the public to discover the latest development in the field. Suggesting to “stop making this stupid distinction between artists and craftsmen”, he predicts that if France continues supporting decorative artists, it “will soon create a real modern art that will no longer be theoretic and artificial like the one that had emerged and expired within ten years, but practical and smiling, formed on the needs of time and at the same time respecting the old and charming traditions” . Shortly after their ending, the critic Arsène Alexandre evokes the exhibitions sponsored by the countess Geffulhe, among a certain number of characteristic “recapitulations”, suggesting for his part that the emergence of a new style cannot be too far, asking himself in the following way: ”Would there really be something in this moment that ends and something that starts again ?”
Text d'origen - Anglès Jorge Alderete’s stark graphic aesthetic, wedding comic-books to a circus-like sensationalism, makes his portraits feel at once old and new. He refers to himself as a “pop illustrator, who uses trash culture, ‘50s science-fiction films, wrestling and surf-music imagery in [his] psychotronic illustrations, animations and comics.” A graduate of the School of Fine Arts in the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina, as a Designer in Visual Communication, he is also co-owner of the independent record label Isotonic Records, for which he has designed album covers for bands from Argentina (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs), Mexico (Lost Acapulco, Twin Tones, Los Explosivos) and the USA (Los Straitjackets), among others.
A committed entrepreneur, Alderete opened Kong in 2006, Mexico’s first design store and gallery, and from 2006 to 2010 was curator of the Terraza space in the Spanish Cultural Center in Mexico. With his wife Clarisa Moura Alderete, he opened the Vertigo Gallery in 2009, focusing on design and illustration. His 2008 book, I am a Nobody, was issued by the French publisher Black Cat Bones, and he is currently general editor for the London-based publisher Korero Books, where he edited The Day of The Dead (2010) and Mexican Graphics (2012).

Autor sám sebe označuje jako „popového ilustrátora, který využívá populární kulturu, filmy science-fiction z 50. let, výjevy z bojů a zvuky příboje ve svých psychotronických ilustracích, animacích a komiksech.“ Jorge Alderete je jakožto absolvent oboru výtvarného umění na Universidad Nacional de La Plata v Argentině návrhářem v oblasti vizuální komunikace a kromě toho také spoluvlastníkem nezávislého nahrávacího studia Iabel Isotonic Records, pro které mimo jiné navrhl přebaly alb pro hudební skupiny z Argentiny (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs), Mexika (Lost Acapulco, Twin Tones, Los Explosivos) a ze Spojených států (Los Straitjackets).
V rámci své aktivní podnikatelské činnosti otevřel Alderette v roce 2006 Kong – první mexický designový obchod a galerii, a v letech 2006-2010 také spravoval prostory Terraza ve Španělském kulturním centru v Mexiku. Společně se svou ženou, Clarisou Moura Alderetovou, otevřel v roce 2009 galerii Vertigo, zaměřující se na design a ilustraci. Jeho knihu z roku 2008, Já jsem kdokoli, vydal francouzský nakladatel Black Cat Bones, a v současné době je Alderete šéfredaktorem nakladatelství sídlícího v Londýně Korero Books, kde vydal své knihy Den mrtvých (2010) a Mexická grafika (2012).
