Depends on the area, of course May 6, 2006

Yes, I do different things to help the community, but no, it is only on rare occasions that it would involve my profession, translation. There I have to make money, and the money is generally there if people want to spend it.

The volunteering I do normally involves other activities.

My main kind of volunteer work is sleeping. I like to bike, and people who know so tend to invite you to stop the night with them. The money I save on a (cheapest) hotel, campground BB and so on I donate to charitable causes.
By the way, looking for cheap hotels in Europe?
[www.bookings.country code] is a good one, for instance for Netherlands, Germany or Czech Republic:

http://www.bookings.de
http://www.bookings.cz

Next to that, seldomly I ad hoc hook up with activities of other volunteers. So I picked the answer "sometimes".

Not translation May 6, 2006

Yes, I do quite a lot of work that can be considered "volunteering", although most of it is not formalized (such as e.g. a lions' club). It sometimes includes proofreading, but hardly ever translation - as the saying goes, the baker doesn't eat bread. I translate enough as it is, I prefer doing something different during the rest of my time.

Sometimes May 6, 2006

I like to volunteer sometimes when I have free time. I translate short texts for charities, etc. I am also part of a group of translators for a free newspaper. Apart from helping others, it is also a way to get interested in new topics, and acquire new vocabulary. I am not a workaholic, but I find translating easier texts relaxing, almost like crosswords...

Yes, on a regular basis May 6, 2006

Yes. I do translations (sometimes interpreting) for an NGO. It all started when I was a university student looking for some translating experience.
I have been their volunteer translator for about 3 years now. The job usually involves letters, invitations and really basic stuff - not very time consuming (3-5 hours per month).

When there really is no money... May 6, 2006

I regularly proof read and occasionally translate small amounts for two non-profit magazines.

There is only a small volume of work - both come out four times a year, and the money just is not there. The readers support cultural activities and art, especially young artists and students... and when there is any money, it is better spent on meetings and events and setting up exhibitions. The readers support cultural activities and art, especially young artists and students... and when there is any money, it is better spent on meetings and events and setting up exhibitions. It's a way of passing on the benefits from people who have helped me on my way - I can never pay most of them back directly, but they would like the spirit of helping others instead.

I feel I ought to do more in other ways for the community - I used to help at the local play group and later on I helped at the Glass Museum in town here, but just now family and work - and getting a little fresh air and exercise!! - take all my time.

Luckily I earn enough to donate money, and at my age I can look forward to retiring some day and taking a more active part again!

Happy translating!

volunteering in one's community May 6, 2006

Volunteering in one's community is so important for building a better society! I donate my translation services to an indigenous migrant association, and until mid-2005, I ran a conversation group and a simplicity circle. From 2001 until 2004, I delivered meals once a week to the elderly and infirm. I don't know what 2006/2007 will bring, but I'm sure I'll find some opportunities to contribute a bit of sweat to the public good.

I hope people will consider giving their of their free time, not just money, and not just their "translation talents" -- believe me, you will feel compensated!

often May 6, 2006

I often do volunteer work translating for NGOs, I also do some webdesign. It's not only good for them but it has been very useful to me also, I have gained experience translating issues I find interesting in a personal level.
But I only do it if I have a reasonable term to do it and does not interfere with my regular paid translation work.
