Dear all,

As I am studying at the moment in the UK, I am considering to spend few days around the New Year in Edinburgh. Have never been to Scotland yet though always wanted to go there. I don't want to spend too much money on accomodation, so I am looking for an insider tip. I will go there with my two sons (13 and 5) and therefore am looking for something suitable for children (safe basically).

Hi Natalia Dec 5, 2008

I don´t want to dishearten you, but by now I think you´d be extremely lucky to find a cheapish accommodation in Edinburgh for Hogmanay. I will keep my ears open and will let you know should I hear something that might suit you and your kids. Furthermore I wouldn´t advise to be out on Edinburgh´s main streets with kids during the Hogmanay celebrations. Maybe someone is of a different opinion, but I personally avoid the city centre of Edinburgh on Hogmanay.

Sorry to be so harsh but I wouldn´t want anyone to come here with kids and expect things to be different from what they are.
Don´t get me wrong, Edinburgh is a beautiful city but around New Year there are just too many people in the streets.

Should you have any other questions, please don´t hesitate to get in touch.

Street party Dec 5, 2008

Hi Natalia,

The main street party in Edinburgh is on Princes Street. I haven't been for a long time but I'm pretty sure you have to pay to get in. I just found this information on the web:

I also agree with Manuela that it will be very difficult to find cheap accommodation over New Year. I would suspect most places are booked out well in advance.

I'm not sure whether it would be possible to stay on one of the university campuses. Perhaps you should look into that?

Travelodge... Dec 5, 2008

Friends stayed in the Travelodge at Edinburgh Haymarket this summer (the Travelodge chain is a rather impersonal chain, with some particularly unprepossessing hotels, but this one is actually rather nice, at least in a nice building, and they are good for staying with children - two kids can go in with Mum: Mum gets the nice double bed and the children sleep on a sofa bed and another bed which pulls out from under the sofa!): The good news is that there is still availability there for New Year's... Ouch. Anyway, here's the website for future reference.

Haymarket could be a bit crazy because you're right down the road from three or four pubs that I can think of off the top of my head and a club. You might be better off tucking yourself away in one of the B&Bs on the other side of Princes Street, going toward New Town. There may be less chaos there. It depends what you're looking for out of your holiday but I'll never forget the singing that woke me up almost every weekend around 3-4 am - and I was on the 4th floor of my building. Did you try the GTA (gtahotels.com) site?
The University does have accommodation but I'm not sure what'll be left at this point. It's very, very basic though so with kids, you might not be happy.
Edinburgh is really pretty around the holidays but if you really want to visit the city without the chaos and the sun going down at 3 in the afternoon, why don't you wait a couple months? You might find better deals, more availability and fewer crowds at the main sites.
And if you're short on time, my recommendation is that if you're going to do the castles, I'd go to Hollyrood over Edinburgh Castle. Sure, Edinburgh Castle is beautiful but it's nicer from a distance than inside. Hollyrood is actually quite interesting, as far as I'm concerned. But I may be opening a can of worms with this one...

If you still decide to go... Dec 5, 2008

Hi Natalia,

Just in case you are still going, I stayed here when I went to Edimburgh, www.townhousehotels.co.uk/hotels/ailsacraig.html, small, cosy, friendly, cheap and nearby quite every other place.

Good luck! I don't know about New Year, but it is a beautiful city to stay at.

Mariana
