It had been spotted at the Critérium du Dauphiné, but on stage 5 of the Tour de France, Fabio Aru (Astana) shot across the finish line to win aboard a custom-painted version of Argon 18’s latest pure race bike, the Gallium Pro.
Canadian bike manufacturer Argon 18 is in its first year of sponsorship with Astana, but the previous generation of the Gallium Pro has seen action at two prior editions of the Tour de France with Bora-Argon 18, in 2015 and 2016.
The latest version of the Gallium Pro is the lightest frame the company has ever produced — a claimed 794g for a medium painted frame including hardware (3D headset and seat clamp). The weight of the fork has also been reduced but it reportedly retains the stiffness and comfort of the original.
The bike doesn’t look massively different to the previous generation, though it’s obvious on close inspection that tube shapes have been refined. As well as a new carbon layup, a new four-point riveted front derailleur hanger is present, plus cable routing. A smaller diameter seat post of 27.2mm now allows a little added comfort out back.
The bike hasn’t gone down the increasingly popular route of direct-mount but rather stuck with traditional single-bolt callipers. The reason being that it gives Argon 18 and its dealer base a wider range of components to choose from when building up the bikes. That’s according to Argon 18 founder and CEO, Gervais Rioux.
The frame now allows for greater tyre clearance, enabling the use of up to 28mm tyres. On stage 5 of the Tour Aru was using 25mm Schwalbe Pro One TT tubulars.
Argon 18’s painted 3D headset technology allows the headset bearings to be mounted closer to the stem no matter the stack height. Instead of placing the top bearing in a race in the head tube, it sits in a race built into a spacer. The claim is that this avoids any marginal flex on the upper part of the fork. The 3D system is available in three heights.
THE WINNER’S BIKE
Aru’s build stuck firmly to the sponsored products, with FSA supplying its top-tier seat post and bars from the K-Force carbon range, with a short (for a pro) 110mm alloy FSA Energy stem. This is an odd choice as it’s part of FSA’s affordable performance line. Wrapping the bars was Prologo’s limited edition reflective tape, a product that was initially developed for the team but will become available to the public later.
Keeping the reflective theme is Aru’s Prologo Scratch saddle. Prologo covered the rear end of the saddle with a reflective material, as well as a little Italian flag to celebrate Aru’s Italian nationals road race win. One omission is that Aru isn’t using Prologo’s painted CPC extra-grip technology on the saddle.
While there was news at the start of the year that FSA would supply the team with its new WE-wireless electronic groupset, there’s yet to be any sign of it. Instead, the team is using Shimano’s 9000 series Dura-Ace with an FSA K-Force chainset. Power meter is supplied by German company Power2max. On stage 5, the drivechain of choice was a standard 53/39 crankset matched with an 11-28 cassette.
Wheels are from long-time Astana sponsor Corima. The French carbon wheel company is a relatively small player in the market but has a long-standing relationship with not just Astana but general manager Alexander Vinokourov. On Aru’s bike was the 47mm deep S+ model, a 1250g pair of hoops. Spoke count is very low on these wheels with 18 up front and 20 rear.
Aru’s paint scheme, a thick toffee apple red, is inspired by the flag of his home island, Sardinia. The team in the Argon 18 paint shop have certainly outdone themselves this time.
Models coming to market will be a Gallium Pro 2018 in gloss black and white, a black and matte grey, and a limited edition Astana Pro team version. No news as yet of Aru’s custom painted version becoming available — a shame as it’s absolutely stunning in the July sunshine.

Ya se avistó en el Critérium du Dauphiné, pero durante la quinta etapa del Tour de Francia, Fabio Aru (Astana) cruzó disparado la linea de meta para ganar montado en una versión personalizada del último modelo de bici de carreras pura sangre de Argon 18, la Gallium Pro.
Se trata del primer año en el que la compañía canadiense Argon 18 patrocina al equipo Astana, pero la generación anterior del modelo Gallium Pro ya se vio en acción en las dos ediciones pasadas del Tour de Francia con el equipo Bora-Argon 18, en 2015 y 2016.
La última versión del cuadro Gallium Pro es el más ligero que la compañía jamás ha producido - con un peso declarado de 794 gramos para la talla mediana con pintura e incluyendo accesorios (dirección y abrazadera del sillín). El peso de la horquilla también se ha reducido pero aseguran que mantiene la rigidez y la comodidad de la original.
La bicicleta no parece enormemente distinta de la generación anterior, aunque es obvio mirando en detalle que las formas de los tubos han sido refinadas. Además de la nueva disposición de las capas de carbono, aparece un nuevo soporte del desviador delantero remachado por cuatro puntos así como un nuevo enrutado de los cables. Una tija del sillín con un diámetro reducido de 27.2 milímetros aporta ahora un poco de comodidad extra en la parte trasera.
La bici no se ha sumado a la tendencia cada vez más popular de los frenos de anclaje directo sino que mantiene los tradicionales frenos de pinza de un solo tornillo. La razón principal según el fundador y CEO de Argon 18, Gervais Rioux es proporcionar a Argon 18 y a su base de distribuidores una gama más amplia de componentes para elegir a la hora de montar las bicis.
El cuadro permite ahora una mayor holgura en el paso de rueda, posibilitando el uso de neumáticos de 28 mm. En la etapa 5 del Tour Aru usó neumáticos tubulares Schwalbe Pro One TT de 25 milímetros.
La tecnología de dirección 3D de Argon 18 permite montar los rodamientos de la dirección más cerca de la potencia sin importar la altura de los espaciadores. En lugar de montar los rodamientos superiores en la cabeza del tubo frontal, estos se asientan en un compartimento habilitado en un espaciador. Aparentemente esto evita cualquier flexión marginal que pudiera haber en la parte superior de la horquilla. El sistema 3D esta disponible en tres alturas.
UNA BICI GANADORA
El montaje de Aru se ciñe básicamente a los productos de sus espónsors, siendo la marca FSA quien suministra su tija de sillín y su manillar de la gama superior de carbono K-Force, así como una potencia FSA Energy de aleación de 110mm (corta para un profesional) Esta última es una extraña elección ya que forma parte de la gama asequible de FSA. Enrollada en el manillar encontramos la cinta Prologo reflectante de edición limitada, un producto que fue inicialmente desarrollado por el equipo profesional pero que será puesto a disposición del público general más adelante.
El sillín Prologo Scratch de Aru también apuesta por los motivos reflectantes. Prologo ha cubierto la parte trasera del sillín con un material reflectante además de añadir una pequeña bander italiana para celebrar el reciente triunfo de Aru en los nacionales italianos de ruta. Se echa en falta que Aru no usa la tecnología CPC de agarre extra en el sillín.
Aunque a principios de temporada se especulaba con que FSA suministraría al equipo su nuevo grupo electrónico sin cables WE, todavía no se han encontrado indicios de ello. En su lugar, el equipo usa Dura-Ace 9000 de Shimano con bielas y platos K-Force de FSA. El potenciómetro lo pone la casa alemana Power2max. En la etapa 5, el desarrollo elegido fue un estándar 53/39 delante con 11-28 atrás.
Las ruedas son Corima, el espónsor de siempre de Astana. La compañía de ruedas de carbono francesa es comparativamente pequeña en el mercado pero mantiene una larga relación no solo con Astana sino con el director general Alexander Vinokurov. En la bici de Aru encontramos el modelo S+ de 47mm, con un peso de 1250 gramos el par. El numero de radios es muy reducido en estas ruedas contando la delantera con 18 y la trasera con 20.
El diseño de la pintura de la bici de Aru, en un denso rojo manzana de caramelo, se inspira en la bandera de su isla natal, Cerdeña. Ciertamente el equipo del taller de pintura de Argon 18 se ha superado a si mismo con este trabajo.
Los modelos de la Gallium pro 2018 que se lanzarán al mercado vendrán en negro y blanco brillante, negro y gris mate así como una edición limitada del equipo profesional Astana. Aún no tenemos noticias de si la versión personalizada de Aru estará disponible - es una pena porque se ve absolutamente deslumbrante bajo el sol de Julio.

Our passion for good design is constantly driving us to look for new forms of promoting it, even beyond our own creativity. With this vision in mind Boo in Barcelona started to curate and produce guest designer’s creations.

My name is Luis de Sousa and I’m a Spanish native speaker translator.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Art with honors in Design by the University of Southampton, UK, and a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and Communication by Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
