Our attempt here is to see whether a translator should or not ever consider translating Mioriţa from a functionalist perspective. We motivate this option by the fact that such an outlook regards translation as a communicative act striving to analyze all the contextual factors involved in communication. Besides, if we were to put in plain words why we decided to apply all that information provided by such a stance to a translation of Mioriţa, we would declare that its being categorized as the most authentic expression of the Romanian spirit determined us to endeavor the task of analyzing to what degree it may be transformed into an authentic target text.
