Never b Jun 15, 2009

I would never choose b.

I think this option is completely wrong and I have already expressed this in the other thread.

This question is about whether the responder personally would, under the present rules, close a question before 24 hours have expired and leave the choice to the community, or wait 24 hours?
The response appears to be 100% for waiting. Enrique is answering a question which is not being asked.

Enrique,
I don't understand your posting.
The initial thread-opener is pretty clear, IMHO:

This new implementation offers two choices to the asker who tries to close a question less than 24 hours after posting it
(bold emphasis is mine)

In other words, Attila asked: if you were the asker and if you wanted to close a question before the 24 hours is over, and at that point were presented these two choices by the system, what would you choose?

Thanks Katalin,

I noticed that some posters stated above that they always wait at least 24 hours before grading, and then I clarified that for them there will be no changes in the grading procedure.

Regards,
Enrique

Not "some" but all of the colleagues who answered the question submitted by the original poster have stated that they would always wait 24 hours before grading (i.e. use option a). Also, I'm afraid that the clarification added by you - as valuable or informative as it might be - has just not been asked for by the original poster of this thread.

I would not transfer my grading rights to the community as a whole. I would always opt for a), unnecessary though I find it.

I believe that some (not all) of the posters above stated that they always waited 24 hours for grading, even before the new feature was implemented. My statement was that for that people the new implementation changed nothing, as they would wait more than 24 hours to grade and would not find the two options offered to those who try to grade before 24 hours.

Always B please!! - sorry, upps!! A, A, A!! Jun 15, 2009

Even when the answer is chosen by the asker, sometimes as a native or "specialist' in the field you can only cry... because it is sooo wrong.
The amount of 'agree' posted on wrong or not so good answers is amazing and should never be the reason for grading an answer: I think the existing system should be changed.

But I am maybe opening up another can of worms - sorry!

Have a nice day - all of you around the world!

Anne-Marie

NB: Thanks, A

Hi Anne-Marie,

I am sorry, could you clarify your position?
Are you saying that you would always transfer the right of closing your questions to the entire community, as the title of your posting suggests? If yes, I fail to see how this is compatible with your reasoning:

If your remark refers to others' questions but not yours, please consider posting them in the other thread -- this one is devoted to transferring the right to close your own question to the community.

Kind regards,
Attila

No, I would not choose option b Jun 15, 2009

a) Wait until 24 hours have passed to grade the question

So, my question is: If you are the asker, would you ever chose option b) for your own question? ...

Kind regards,
Attila

No, the community does not have my document so I don't believe that they know the best answer better than me, the Asker. Also people tend to think in their own dialect of the target language which may not be correct in my context, either.

The new system Jun 15, 2009

is obviously going to be very effective in preventing questions being closed before 24 hours have elapsed, since hardly anyone is willing to relinquish grading rights.

I think it's inspired.

What am I missing here?

The fact that a high proportion of these people would prefer to retain the right to close the question when they think fit.

I see. Jun 15, 2009

To me, it's no hardship to wait 24 hours and it makes it more likely that the answer chosen is the best available option. I've had the experience of thinking I knew which answer to choose, but then seeing something much better come in after a number of hours.

It also avoids the frustration of seeing questions closing within minutes or hours, before everyone's had a chance to look at them/respond.

If you are really in a situation where you don't want anyone else to answer one of your questions, you could always put a note to that effect in the discussion box, I suppose.
