I was watching one of the episodes of "Wild, #WildWeb" hosted by NBC's Chris Hansen. The show is basically an investigative report on Internet fraud (and just plain fraud).
One of the incidences he reported on involved a bunch of scammers scouting for acting talent. They charge the wannabe actors hundreds of dollars for portfolio headshots, but do nothing with the headshots afterwards. The footage showed lots of people waiting in line in the studio lobby just to be taken.

我了解，加入ATA directory 是一种广告的形式，告诉大家，有这样一个自由译者存在。客户自会根据自己的标准，选择合适的译者。我不希求，一打广告就能带来业务，但是做自己该做且能做的，结果无论得失都会心安。

显然，对于如此多的 Entries，没有一个客户会有耐心一个个地去看。如果 profile 做得不好，那就更没人感兴趣了。ATA 有不少会员的 profile 只有寥寥可数的几行字。依我看，这无异于浪费会员费。
再看看这个：

Paper & pulp 不就是你的“上马”之一吗？ ATA 允许会员最多列出12 匹马。足以让你列出你的上马和中马了。

谢谢您分享的经验教训。让我不光看到翻译界光明的一面，也看到灰暗的一面。了解这些，我倒是不觉得郁闷，也许是还没发生到我头上吧。不过，至少已经有了思想准备。

正在朝着这个方向努力。这个暑假，除了带孩子们参加各种暑期班，还有不少空闲时间，就抓紧学习了Trados软件，并且阅读了张培基先生的《英汉翻译教程》，为提供高质量服务做准备。

其他国家的译者可以申请Corresponding membership。但是，对开发客户是不是真有帮助，就不得而知了。

Check out the ATA application page. It clearly has this notation: "Non-U.S. residents: International postage $52 all countries (except Canada and Mexico $22)."

Membership for Individuals Associate Open to any individual interested in the goals and objectives of ATA. All individual applicants must remain Associate members for four weeks before applying for Active Membership Review or taking an ATA certification exam. Passage of a certification exam automatically advances Associate members to Active or Corresponding member status. Associate members possess full rights and privileges, as defined by the ATA Bylaws, except the right to vote and hold Association office. Thank you for providing the ATA membership info. I guess the associate membership is enough for most of the freelance translators.

Yes, I would think an associate member is the same as a corresponding member except for location. To become an ATA-certified member would require passing a test. From what I gathered from some of the forum posts in the past, there is only an English-to-Chinese certification process available.
