Resentment From A Maid Of Honour

The jade steps were wet with white dew,
Her socks were damped before she knew.
She lowered the crystal curtain slightly,
And she still watched the Autumn moon sadly.
Notes: In ancient China Maids of Honour were not
allowed to leave the Palace and get married all their lives.
Qiupu Poetry
The poetry was written by Li Bai in Qiupu, Anhui Province. The place ,Qiupu, was named after Lake Qiuhu. The whole series of poetry includes 17 poems in total.
The 14th Poem
Qiupu is a place rich in silver and copper. The poem was written for the smelting workers.
The smelting fire lit up the sky and the ground,
Purple smoke rose up with red sparks flying round.
Faces near the fire went scarlet in the moonlight,
Cold rivers were deeply moved by their tune at night.
The 15th Poem
Li Bai wrote this poem at the age of more than fifty. Until then, he hadn’t achieved anything great in politics except for his poetry. Learned men in ancient China valued achievements in politics. So he composed this poem to express the melancholy in his heart of hearts.
Ten thousand metres long was my hair,
Because a deep depression in my heart lay.
Looking at myself in the mirror,
I was surprised to see my hair was so gray.
Sitting Alone In Mount Jingting

All the birds have flown off high,
A single cloud has gone leisurely.
Mount Jingting and I are left alone,
Eyeing each other never tiredly.
Note: This poem seemingly expresses the poet`s leisurely mood, but in fact it shows his disappointment after his failure in politics.
Gazing At The Waterfall Of Mount Lushan
The sun shining over Xianglu, purple smoke is rising up from it,
I see a waterfall hanging over the river far ahead.
It is flying a long way down straight,
As if the Milky Way were dropping to the ground.
Notes: 1. Xianglu is one of the peaks of Mount Lushan.
2.Purple smoke is a mixture of mist and vapour.
Mourning For Old Man Ji From Xuancheng Who Is Adept At Making Liquor
You`ve passed away and gone to heaven,
There you should continue to make liquor.
Here is no Li Bai,
To whom shall I sell it in the future?
Notes: 1.Xuancheng is a beautiful town in southern Anhui Province, a place of interest.
2.Old Man Ji was Li Bai`s friend, who shone in making liquor. Li Bai was fond of drinking.
Starting Out From Baidi On The Morn
On the morn I bade Baidi farewell in the colourful clouds,
Returning to Jiangling six hundred km away only in a day . Along the River apes jabbered without stopping on both sides,
My light boat had passed so many mountains fast without delay.
Notes: 1. This poem indicates that Li Bai left Baidi with a light heart after his exile was remitted. The place of his exile was Yelang, a county in the east of Guizhou Province.
2. Baidi: a well-known town on Mount Baidi to the east of Fengjie County, Sichuan Province.
3. in the colourful clouds: The morning clouds with the sun shining looked colourful. Besides, the altitude of Baidi was high. Therefore the poet said so.
4. Jiangling: a town in Hubei Province to the east of Sichuan Province.
