Source text - French Le troisième jour arriva.
Jim alla chercher le shaman du village pour effectuer le rituel du baptême. Deux poulets furent sacrifiés pour inviter l’âme à résider pour toujours dans le corps de l’enfant et dans la maisonnée des parents. Jim fixa au cou de son fils une petite chaîne en argent pour attacher son âme à son corps — car les âmes aiment les objets précieux — et pour signifier aux esprits que cet enfant-là n’était pas un esclave mais un être humain reçu et accepté par la famille et par le clan. Il donna un nom à son fils : « Tu appartiens au clan Yang et je te nomme Jack ».
Jim le présenta ensuite aux différents esprits de la maison pour le mettre sous leur protection ; les esprits de l’autel des ancêtres, l’esprit central de la maison, l’esprit du foyer, l’esprit de la porte et l’esprit de la chambre.
Puis il porta son fils à l’extérieur et le haussa à bout de bras pour le présenter aux nuages.
Translation - English The third day came.
Jim went off to find the village shaman to ask him to perform the baptismal rite. Two chickens were sacrificed in order to urge the baby’s soul to remain forever in his body and in his parents’ household. Jim attached a little silver chain around his son’s neck to bind his soul to his body—for souls like precious objects—and to let the spirits know that this particular baby was not a slave but a human being whom the family and the clan had welcomed and accepted. He named his son: “You belong to the Yang clan, and I have given you the name ‘Jack.’”
Next, Jim presented him to all of the various house spirits, asking them to place him under their protection: the ancestor altar spirits, the primary house spirit, the hearth spirit, the door spirit, and the room spirit.
Then he carried his son outside, raising him over his head as high as he could reach, to introduce him to the clouds.

Bio
After living and working in Paris for 9 years, I returned to the US, where I soon realized that I needed to find a way to keep my wonderful experience with the French alive. it occurred to me that translation might be the best way to make use of my language expertise. I wanted to create a linguistic bridge between French and US businesses that would help them communicate, so I created a business called "The French Connection," which I envisaged as a way to link the two cultures. Having majored in 16th-to-20th-century French literature in college, I decided to specialize in both general business and literary translations.
About 10 years ago, I added two related services to my business: tutoring ESL and French to US and foreign students, and copyediting for independent authors and publishers in the US and France. To date, three of my copyedited books have been published, along with five book length translations requested by French authors. Being a French translator has turned out to be the most personally rewarding and instructive careers that I could have ever imagined.
