Source text - English LIE # 1：ADVERTISING MAKES YOU BUY THINGS YOU DON’T WANT.
Advertising is often accused of inducing people to buy things against their will.
But when was the last time you returned home from the local shopping mall with a bag full of things you had absolutely no use for? The truth is, nothing short of a pointed gun can get anybody to spend money on something he or she doesn’t want.
No matter how effective an ad is, you and millions of other American consumers make your own decisions. If you don’t believe it, ask someone who knows firsthand about the limits of advertising. Like your local dealer.
LIE # 2: ADVERTISING MAKES THINGS COST MORE.
Since advertising costs money, it is natural to assume it cost your money. But the truth is that advertising often brings prices down.
Consider the electronic calculator, for example. In the late 1960s, advertising creates a mass market for calculators. That meant more of them needed to be produced, which brought the price of producing each calculator down. Competition spurred by advertising brought the price down still further. As a result, the same product that used to cost hundreds of dollars now costs as little as five dollars.
LIE # 3. ADVERTISING HELPS BAD PRODUCTS SELL.
Some people worry that good advertising sometimes covers up for bad products.
But nothing can make you like a bad product. So, while advertising can help convince you to try something once, it can’t make you buy it twice. If you don’t like what you’ve bought, you won’t buy it again. And if enough people feel the same way, the product dies on the shelf.
In other words, the only thing advertising can do for a bad product is to help you find out it’s a bad product. And you take it from there.
LIE # 4. ADVERTISING IS A WASTE OF MONEY.
Some people wonder why we don’t just put all the money on advertising directly into our national economy.
The answer is, we already do.
Advertising helps products sell, which holds down prices, which helps sell even more. It creates jobs. It informs you about all the products available and helps you compare them. And it stimulates the competition that produces new and better products at reasonable prices.
If all that doesn’t convince you that advertising is important to our economy, you might as well stop reading.
Because on top of everything else, advertising has paid for a large part of the magazine you’re now holding.
And that’s the truth.

Imperial cities
Austria’s three great cities are packed with pleasures for the visiting tourist. In Vienna, home of the world-famous Boy’s Choir and Spanish Riding School, you can sit in a coffee-house, enjoy a decadent slice of Linzertorte and drink in centuries of history, preserved in the wonderful architectural gems which surround you. Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, is an unrivaled place of pilgrimage for music and art lovers, as well as being one of the most picturesque cities in Europe, its skyline of medieval spires, domes and turrets set against a stunning mountain backdrop. And then there’s Innsbruck, the ancient capital of the Tyrol, where you can wander the maze of narrow, medieval streets, and browse through the little shops which sell all kinds of souvenirs – from exquisitely painted ornaments to crystals carved out of the Alps.
Mountain scenery
It may be best known as a winter wonderland, but from early June, when the spring flowers carpet the landscape, the Austrian Tyrol becomes the classic picture-postcard destination. Quaint villages with traditional chalets and rustic inns nestle in deep green valleys, surrounded by towering, snow-clad peaks. Lakes, streams and cascading waterfalls glisten in the sunshine. And as you ramble through the glorious scenery, you can feel the exhilarating effects of the crisp, clean mountain air. ‘Gemutlichkeit’ is the Austrian word for the unique atmosphere of old-world charm and congeniality which characterizes this welcoming corner of the world, and there’s no better place to experience it than a traditional Tyrolean evening, as you enjoy a glass or two of beer and sing along to the local ‘oompah’ band. With its colorful, gabled buildings and cobbled streets, the 14th-century town of Kitzbuehel is the very essence of Tyrolean charm. It’s also a paradise for walkers, with 180 kilometers of marked trails ideal for anything from a gentle stroll to an adventurous hike.
Hearty eating
All that fresh air is sure to give you an appetite. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of hearty local dishes to oblige, including Germknodel (a yeast dumpling filled with plum jam), Kasespatzle (baked pasta dumplings with a cheese topping), and Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pancakes served with preserved fruit). And of course, there’s Austria’s world-famous pastry dessert, strudel. As for drinks, the local beers and wines are generally good and inexpensive.
