Spanish term

dejarte hecho una filigrana

Spanish to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
This is for a book for teenagers on woodworking. It is a cartoon. More than translated, this need to be localised. It just has to be something funny that fits the picture and hopefully the subject of woodworking.
=
There are two chisels on the left, one is saying “vamos a dejarte hecho una filigrana”
In the middle is a piece of wood, who is the “victim”.
On the right are a hammer, a file (saying “hecho polvo …”) and planer (saying “virutas …”)
=
So basically they are threatening the piece of wood, which makes it a bit touchy. It can’t be too violent, it has to be kind of kid-oriented. Thanks for your help!

I also don’t really get “viruatas”…

Discussion

Christine Walsh Nov 24, 2011:
Cheers. See you're getting your version into shape ;) Another possibility for the last one could also be 'and maybe give you a shave'. Suerte!
S Ben Price (asker) Nov 24, 2011:
Thanks! So far I've got - "We're going to get you in shape" "Whittle you down to size" "Maybe a shave"
philgoddard Nov 23, 2011:
I like Julie's "makeover" idea.

The plane could say:"When did you last have a shave?" and the file could say: "Your nails need filing", with a play on "nails".
S Ben Price (asker) Nov 23, 2011:
I imagine we some leeway for the text length. the bubbles can be made smaller or bigger. It seems to me the original is quite violent.
Juan Alvarez Nov 23, 2011:
"hacer virutas" Significa destrozar, también en sentido figurado ("se quedó hecho virutas a descubrir la verdad").
philgoddard Nov 23, 2011:
They all presumably need to be very short to fit into the speech bubbles.
philgoddard Nov 23, 2011:
I'm not sure about "filigranas" (doesn't it refer to metal?), but the exact meaning of these phrases doesn't matter. Basically, we need three diferent, and punning, ways of saying "We're going to sort you out". It's a shame the hammer isn't speaking, because that could be saying: 'We'll knock you into shape."
S Ben Price (asker) Nov 23, 2011:
@andy I got that. But I think there must be a play on words there.
Andy Watkinson Nov 23, 2011:
"Virutas" are wood shavings

We'll shape you up! /...and file you down... / ...and even shave you...

Good luck, Ben. It's rather nonsensical, but should at least fit the speech bubbles.

Glad you like it. Could even be 'file you down to size', but would lose its rhythm. Saludos

Thanks, Evelyn :)
neutral philgoddard : I think this is too literal - and, as you say, it's nonsensical. It should be possible to make a good joke out of the Spanish.

Be my guest, Phil - well, Ben's really. It was just off the top of my head, and I hope someone comes up with a really bright idea :)

we're going to rip you apart

Note from asker:
That's the idea. But it is a book for kids. So, it has to be something much less violent.

knock you into shape

could chisels knock a piece of wood into shape?

not sure about the hammer, but the plane perhaps something like 'tear a strip off you'?

maybe the file could be saying 'don't rub me up the wrong way!'. I do realise all my suggestions are a fair bit longer though.
