external hard drive Sep 25, 2007

External hard drive. Better if you can get two and keep one at another address/somewhere very secure, updating it regularly.

Agreed Sep 25, 2007

I agree, I also prefer an external hard drive although I use memory sticks a lot too as you can carry them around with you during the day which is a massive asset.

CDs to keep the peace Sep 25, 2007

At my house, the external HD is occupied by downloaded TV series, movies, music, pictures of Hilary Duff, Zac Efron and whatever or whoever else teenagers fancy these days. So it’s safer if I keep copies and saved work on CDs. They stay in my office and it’s not a battle to get at them when I need them.

They say though, that CDs are going to go out of use in the future, so maybe I’ll have to change my strategy.

CDs Sep 25, 2007

Nowadays, I save my work on CDs but I am thinking of buying an external hard drive. As I don’t have children as John has, that’s not a problem for me;). I have a dog but I don’t think she would like to keep movies about Tom and Jerry or you know a case?:)
Best,
Fernando

External hard drive Sep 25, 2007

You can buy a 1 TB external hard drive for a few hundred dollars.... that should be enough to back up the contents of an entire small LAN

Flash drive and two computers. Are flash drive, memory stick and pen drive all the same? It's only the size of a cigarette lighter, plugs into a USB port, holds a lot.

Combination of methods Sep 25, 2007

And as much as possible automated.
I'm a bit forgetful sometimes, my PC isn't.

So, I upload to a remote server( hosting service), I synchronize data on two computers (network) and every now and then on my laptop. And if I'm working on a really important project, I use a memory stick.

John, I do believe they still make diskettes - 3½ inch ones, that is. Do you even remember 5¼ inch diskettes? Man, this makes me feel old....

CD and diskette (they haven't completely disappeared in my case, I still use them to backup short oncgoing jobs)

Margreet: you mean the real floppy disks? I still have a couple as a memento.

I was going to ask this. I was under the impression that memory stick and pen drive were the same thing...

Me too, Andrea! Sep 25, 2007

Margreet: you mean the real floppy disks? I still have a couple as a memento.

Me too. Unbelievable isn't it, that they were once state of the art.

My very first computer had a 20 MB harddrive and two diskdrives, one for 3½" and one for 5¼" diskettes. It was a fullsize desktop PC and very modern then. By comparison, these days I have a 128 MB memory stick that fits into my pocket easily. Well, I suppose that's progress, but it still amazes me to think about it....

Other - External hard drive Sep 25, 2007

For me the only way to keep the data safely backed up. Tried CDs, but some of the content got corrupted, so I don't use them any more.
I can never fill up a 300 gig hard drive anyway.
