Accountant Mar 27, 2008

Couldn't be without him, come April. He's also a fantastic guy who's given me a lot of good business advice over the past few years.

Don’t know what I’d do without my accountant!

I also think every translator should have a good computer techie nearby!

What would I do without my husband? Mar 27, 2008

Living in Spain away from family and with a toddler, I couldn´t do this without his support. Helps he knows more about concrete etc than I do!

Accountant, au pair, credit ratings agency, collection agency, lawyer, husband, dog Mar 27, 2008

I couldn't do without my accountant - he does all of my bookkeeping and tax returns for me.

Our au pair is great! Gives us the space we need (child-wise) to get our work done.

I use a credit ratings agency to check up on any new clients before agreeing to work for them (in addition to the blue board, etc.)

I use a collection agency if any client is difficult about paying. Haven't needed to use them much, but good to have as a back up.

The lawyer is there for emergencies only - dealing with clients that don't pay. Thankfully I haven't needed to use him often.

The computer company when I have an IT crisis.

And there's my darling hubby to provide me with moral support.

And my dog - my faithful companion and confidante. He keeps me sane!

A.

Why don't you put your dog first, Alison? Mar 27, 2008

My German Shepherd Dog comes first in the list - dogs are good for making people relax. However, I have to catch 12 planes a year to see mine (4 planes, 3 times a year).

I am surprised that so few people mention the need for a lawyer. I have a lawyer and accountant at the same firm, which is very practical. Another guy that nobody seems to have mentioned is an insurance broker to fix up your pension plans optimally, so that you can eventually give up translating....

Other - The advantage of being both employed and self-employed Mar 27, 2008

What would I do without free advice from:

1. Our in-house lawyers whilst making tea in the kitchen
2. My friends in accounts whilst looking at flowers on the patio (and only holding a cigarette in my right hand - please note, only to avoid fidgeting with my hands)
3. The desktop support team (having moved from a desktop to a laptop obviously helps)

Accountant Mar 27, 2008

I am absolutely horrible at accountings, so my accountant is the most precious of all. I also use the help of other translators (Kudoz, forums) quite frequently.

With A Little Help From My Friends! Mar 27, 2008

The Beatles were so very wise! Other translators have helped me out tremendously in the past. My other greatest source of information (and my computer god) is my husband. Every time I come down and say "Honey..." he lets out an exasperated sigh. "What's broken now?"

Specfically the colleagues here on ProZ. I'm glad this poll has given me the chance to thank everyone who has helped me when I'm stuck on some term or another. It's an invaluable source.

Nanny, IT guy ("San David"), translators and friends... Mar 28, 2008

A little (sometimes a lot) of everything...

The nanny who lives in our apartment and has been with us for one month and a half... this one is set to last!!!! (most nannies quit faster than that).

"San David"... the IT guy from the last company I worked for (before becoming a full-time translator). He solves every single problem I have with my computer and other electronic devices. He's my savior and I cannot ever thank him enough!

Of course other fellow translators. Every time I have a question and I can rely on other amazing translators helping me thru Proz or personal e-mail (Carmen, Ellen, Lisa...)

My dear friends who always get to advise me on "what sounds more natural... this or that" and how do you say in your company "this or the other"...

And my husband and kids for just being there, complaining quite often but there, being the best!
