I don't know what they are talking about. Thanks for the opportunity, Phil.

Yes, Henry, may you get an outing for somedays, with Bible in your hands.
Proz.com is really a worthwhile site, which is result of some good people like you. I have been observing it since the year 2002-3 and became a member in the year 2007, Even if it has complications somewhere, yet it is giving a ground to lot of potentially good translators and linguists.

No auction? Jan 21, 2010

... no auctions or other attempts to influence behaviour, just plain communication and search ...

Really strange... The whole job posting system at ProZ.com is not a reverse auction anymore?

I am sure it is one and I am very sure that I will ignore it!

Very interesting and updated interview Jan 21, 2010

"the transformation of translation from solitary pursuit to ‘team sport’ is already well under way"
As a long standing translator, I completely agree with Henry's comments.
We have started the second decade of the twenty-first century and the future of our profession is changing everyday, as Henry says, from working by ourselves into working in teams.
Thank you for having created this magnificent site for all translators!

... leaves me wanting more... Jan 23, 2010

Beats me what ATA found "offensive"... the interview was very short and I certainly would love to learn more about the founder of Proz, considering Phil posted a request for questions and the many controversial ones that posting raised.... I expected a "juicy" interview)

But maybe someone somewhere will do a thorough study of Henry D one day!!

cheers
Sandhya

thoughts Jan 25, 2010

Maybe ATA meant that some things in the interview were offensive to... translators / readers of the interview because some answers were rather vague or incomplete. I don't know, it's just a thought. I was certainly not satisfied with a couple of the answers; like the one about KudoZ: come on, we know that the system is meant to be used as a last resort but that it is not used as such by many, and the measures in place don't work as well as we'd like; or the one about rates: the proz directory mi... I think that was a very bad analogy. When I read that I thought "who are you kidding?" Maybe that was the offensive part? Although what was actually compared to the phone directory was "the market side of ProZ", which I find to be an even worse analogy because it's quite vague. I wish Henry had elaborated some more.
Other than that, I think your questions were very good, Phil. I wish there had been more. You can try submitting the interview to other translation journals, or even add it to the proz article knowledgebase.

I think it does make sense that the ATA Chronicle rejected it. The Chronicle mostly contains information prepared and shared by other translators on a wide variety of useful topics, and very rarely indeed (if ever) features interviews of entrepreneurs in the industry. Proz.com is not an ONG, but a business, so this decision matches The Cronicle's editorial line.

I also found the interview a bit too short and feel that the main areas of concern (even of many of us full members supporting the site with our help in Kudoz and our yearly fee) were addressed very lightly indeed, e.g. the assesstment that Proz.com drove rates down in the industry. This has been a big topic of debate for years, and cannot be simply dealt with in a single question.

It was interesting reading though. Thanks for sharing!

On the offensive side Jan 25, 2010

From the interview: A substantial minority of translators use your terminology forum as their first port of call because they’re too lazy to use a dictionary or do their own research. What are you doing to discourage this?

I honestly think that using this wording is indeed offensive, and not just to that minority you describe. Wouldn't you think that saying that "A substantial minority of old people are so slow that they get hit by cars" would be offensive to

I honestly think that using this wording is indeed offensive, and not just to that minority you describe. Wouldn't you think that saying that "A substantial minority of old people are so slow that they get hit by cars" would be offensive to the whole of the older generations, not just to those hit by cars?

Yes, personally I might share your opinion when I see some people asking 2,000 questions in Kudoz and answering only 10 (I wonder why they are allowed to do so without being charged for the service --our service really--), but the problem is in the expression. As a translator, you are a professional of choosing the right words. You could have said "A substantial minority of translators favour Proz.com's terminology forum to the use of dictionaries or their own research". The expression would have been more respectful, and everybody would understand what you mean.

the following:

Good interview, ATA made a mistake by not publishing it in Chronicle. They hate Proz and they are afraid of it at the same time, as Proz is taking a lot of power out of ATA.
ATA is like old media, it is slowly going the way of Dodo bird.
By Radovan Pletka Owner, Czech and Slovak Services

and quickly got a response from Jiri Stejskal:

Just for the record, ATA and ProZ maintain amicable relationship and do not compete with each other.

Jiri Stejskal, ATA Past President

Of course, I could not resist and wrote:

Hi Jiri, nice to hear from you. Long time no see (smile)
For the record:
Rejecting the interview was petty and stupid. It was definitely at or above par with other stuff you publish in Chronicle. But as the proof of the pudding is in the eating, here the proof of amicable relationship you claim in this case will be in the reading the next interview with Henry in Chronicle (smile).
I will be waiting for such "better" interview to appear in ATA Chronicle, but I am afraid it will be a long wait.
I am even willing to interview Henry for Chronicle (this way I can put my PhD in journalism into a good use - smile), and I will do it with my US English editor, so that the final product is of publishing quality.
So let me know how many words I will get in Chronicle for this interview and when will be the deadline and if there are any forbidden topics or something else which would prohibit the interview to be published in ATA Chronicle.
As I like to up the stakes, I will publish this exchange at my Yahoo group Jobs for translators site (5000+ translators), so that it get a bit bigger publicity than here. And I have the feeling it will appear at Proz as well (smile)
Feel free to check it out shortly (smile) at

Sincerely
