大型受光素子

Optical terminology.

Selected

large-sized light-sensitive cell (photoreceptor)

It is a large-sized light-sensitive cell that measures the light reflected from or falling on a subject, used as an aid for selecting the exposure setting.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks. I used as your answer, but substituted "large-sized" for "large format" because the context made a clear delineation between photoreceptors used in smaller digital cameras, and the those (and the technology) used in digital SLR cameras. Thanks,"

Large optical receiver modules

Another guess. (See English at the bottom of the second link)

Hmmm...think the context may be wrong though - these are more for communications me thinks.

photosensor

I dug out a manual for a Sony XC-711 CCD camera. Much in the same style as "photoreceptors" that Valentina suggested, here the translator has used "photosensor".

"The surface of the CCD contains a number of photosensors." The Japanese in this case is フォトセンサー(感光素子)

I presume the difference is negligible and reflected in the Japanese by the use of 感 or 受. So Valentina's photoreceptor is more accurate when you think about the kanji.

However, in some other documents (see links), the writers distinguish between photoreceptors (in the human eye) and photosensors (in video cameras).

As for the first suggestion I made yesterday, I would avoid using it in this context.

large(r) format CCD (image sensor)

1) Since it's a topic of digital cameras, the photorecepter here is the CCD.
2) It's not the size of a photorecepter but the number of photorecepters in certain area that is discussed here. "mega pixels", "high resolution"

Because it has become possible to arrange much more photorecepters in small area, you can use only the center (and not the edge) of the lens.

Hope this helps
