This is in reference to an artist, and the full sentence is: "(name of the artist's mentor) と老子論に花を咲かせ、京都へ行った。From the context, it would seem to mean he "took an interest in" or "was attracted to" or "was spurred on by".... But I can't find anything to confirm or clarify that for me. The odd combination of subjects complicates it more, too. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

I think it can be translated in many different ways, and I am sure you can come up with something better than mine. But what it means is that they talked about it a lot, and they enjoyed doing so. ”（They) had a good time discussing it" is anonther way to say it. It is often used with "hanasi ni": 話に花を咲かせる

”（話に）花を咲かせる" means to talk or discuss about something, and can be used for various subjects like "老子論" this time, or "思い出話" (talking about the good old days) for example.
There may be better expression for this, but I am sure that they actually talk about 老子論.
