German term

autorisierende Größe

German to English Art/Literary Philosophy
"Authentizität ist damit ein Begriff, der seine paradoxe Position zwischen subjektiver Legitimierung und objektiver Beglaubigung nicht aufgibt. Er wird in seiner reflexiven Selbstinszenierung als polemischer Gegenbegriff ebenso greifbar wie als **autorisierende Größe**."

Discussion

philgoddard Aug 20, 2010:
You have my sympathy, Parrot. This kind of guff is almost untranslatable - you could probably translate "autorisierende Größe" as "Mickey Mouse" and no one would ever notice.
Parrot (asker) Aug 20, 2010:
You know, I was toying with "entity". Would you believe, "quantum"? (Schnob appeal... :D)
Parrot (asker) Aug 20, 2010:
"autorisierende" But Johanna, you got the right author. Marcos, the general field is art theory. This applies to documentary and performance art.
Johanna Timm, PhD Aug 20, 2010:
nicht "legitimisierende Größe"? http://www.iaslonline.lmu.de/index.php?vorgang_id=1715

value might work for Größe
Marcos Guntin Aug 20, 2010:
Context? Do you know the author, general topic, and/or the title of this work?

justification

You can only ever hope to convey the approximate gist of texts like these (they always make me think of the emperor's new clothes), but here's my attempt at the whole sentence:

Its self-referentiality can be seen both as a polemical counterargument and as a justification in its own right.

And please don't ask me to explain what that means.
Peer comment(s):

agree Thayenga : I like justification because it conveys the message quite clearly.
